emails from overseas - how can you tell what time they were sent?

If an email from a friend overseas arrives in your In Box and says 'Message Sent 13.40' for exapmle...is that 13.40 in the UK time (i.e. has it automatically adjusted itself to UK time?)OR 13.40 their time?

am utterly confused and not sure if it's worth email friend back to try and start on- line conversation!

It is normally local time of sender but should say GMT, BST, EST etc

I thought so too - but this one just has the time!

It was from the east side of US - it said 13.40 - I haven't been on line all day so don't know when it arrived.
Did she send it in her lunch time and is she online now as we are five hours ahead? ( i have sent her an email back BTW - just wanted to knwo for future reference)

I think it may be 2:15 in New york (or there abouts), am talking to a friend online and I think that's the time on her end.

When I used my laptop in Aussie last week I was having an email conversation with my Nephew in UK

I was using my Googlemail account registered in UK

And all the times were on UK time {ie nightime}

BUT I was in afternoon in Aussie
