Just for a bit of light relief - I was sitting in my usual semi - comatose state yesterday evening, staring blankly at the TV, adverts washing over me, when I began to wander which adverts get on other peoples nerves? Which drive you potty every time you hear/see them? I know this is a bit banal, but it's about my level......
For starters, the 'best' have to be daytime TV ads - in particular - "Wahey, just call us the Fybogel Family...."
Any more for any more?.......

What about the really awful ones that have so obviously been dubbed. I always remember one for L'Oreal (I think) that had Andie McDowall in it. They had dubbed her with an English accent for a while then changed her back again!

What about the little boy on the loo complaining of the smell and then pulling up his pullups without having a wipe!! (or am I being picky!). R

slug · 12/03/2002 09:53

LOL EmmaM. I've just seen another one that always gets my back up (morning TV, my secret shame) It's for Norton Finance. It's one of those consolidate all your debts jobbies, but what really gets my back up is the happy woman at the end who paid off all her debts and still had enough left over to buy a new car. It's just so irresponsible! Encouraging people to get into even more debt. Stop me before I come over all Calvanistic.

Rosy · 12/03/2002 11:00

The one I can't stand is for some car. It has perfect couple, with the woman heavily pregnant, and says "3 Lives, 1 planet, 0 compromise". Aaaarghhh! Firstly, it looks very much like "baby as fashion accessory to our perfect lives". But also, the idea that owning a car involves no compromises is ridiculous. Lots of people are forced to or choose to have a car, but of course that represents a compromise (eg convenience & greater job opportunities versus pollution and road accidents.) Do you think I'm taking this all a bit too personally?

I loved a cartoon I saw in Private Eye about car adverts. It showed "ad"(single car on the road, speeding along through tree-lined roads) and "Reality"(moving at a snail's pace through inner-city traffic.) Have you noticed how the most "up their own derrieres" ads are for the most banal products?

jodee · 12/03/2002 13:01

Am I the only person NOT to have seen the Fybogel ad?
I can't stand that awfully dubbed one where the boyfriend asks the girlfriend if he can have one of her 'sweets' which are really Tampax in disguise - eugh.

SueDonim · 12/03/2002 13:55

Nope, Jodee, I haven't seen the fybogel ad, either. I'm too addicted to the computer to watch tv these days!!

Enid · 12/03/2002 14:12

The tampax advert always makes me laugh - the woman in it must be the only one in the world who DOESN'T have sweets in the house when she's got her period.

I also hate the fybogel/big forehead family. And the OXO family are AWFUL, so unlikely and cringe making ("suck-butt" indeed). The old ones were much better, sweet and funny.

MotherofOne · 12/03/2002 14:12

No, I haven't seen the fybogel ad either! Maybe it's regional?
BTW Tigermoth - come in - where are you in all this discussion - am I right in thinking you are (were?) a copy writer? Come on - defend your reputation, or at least tell us why clients insist on running such dreadful ads!

Enid · 12/03/2002 14:16

Go on Lizzer! I need something else to take my mind off working today...

tiktok · 12/03/2002 14:55

I agree about the OXO family - they are working so hard at trying to be 'realistic' and they just make me sick....so sick I really cannot bring myself to buy OXO. Who are they meant to be appealing to?

ChanelNo5 · 12/03/2002 15:57

I can't stand the smug couple on the Brita water filter ad, I feel like sending my kids round to mess up their immaculate, minimalist, white house!

sis · 12/03/2002 16:24

ChanelNo5, me too, me too! I can't stand them it's they way she talks that really gets me "MY lovely cup of tea" oh and the fact that dh fancies her...

leese · 12/03/2002 18:17

Go on Lizzer!! - with this collective lot, we're BOUND to have all the answers......and I DO remember that bloody awful breathing advert - dead pompous and pretentious for something so special we can't even remember what it is...

Willow2 · 12/03/2002 18:40

Think the one for Landrover (or similar) where bloke picks up gourd and puts it to mouth only to then spot picture of "natives" wearing same gourds on their "bits" is v funny

Tinker · 12/03/2002 19:07

That prancing Yakult kid really needs a slap (metaphorically,of course!). Also hate that one for the cooling strip when your kid's got a temperature: "How's my little soldier?" "I'll survive". Even my 4 year old mimics that one.

Yes, that "inspirational" teacher nonsense in the car ad - can't BELIEVE the students look like they're taking her seriously.

That Halifax idiot - sooooo glad I changed my mortgage from them now.

And, no, I don't know ANYONE who says "suck-butt" either.

Ailsa · 12/03/2002 21:00

I HATE the Halifax ads - all of them, and, I hate the andrex ads, the ones where the puppy has the loo roll all over the place - ds just has to copy!

Enid · 12/03/2002 21:34

Lizzer, it was for an internet bank breathe.co.uk.

They went bust.

jodee · 12/03/2002 22:17

There's an ad for coffee (Nescafe??) where the guy's driving around town in a car with hair on its roof; they go through a carwash and it poofs up into an afro - every time it's on I get a running commentary from dh because it's set in Port Talbot/Swansea and that's where he grew up, he walked down that street, the M4's just behind that tree, etc. (yawn)

Lizzer · 13/03/2002 00:51

Well, if you insist...

Thanks for letting me know which advert the breathing one was. How thick am I 'erm...got breathing in it, maybe a bank or an internet site, can't quite remember' - doh!(glad it went bust though, couldn't have taken anymore)

I sat with my ds yesterday and watched abit of CBBC or whatever its called and was horiffied to see that it says 'Sponsored by Milky Way' after every short programme! Thats abit cheeky I think, and ds kept wailing for bloody Milky Ways! Also haven't seen this famous fybogel ad. Been looking out for it too now I've heard so much about it! I hated the Levi's ad where they all got twisted up in their twisted jeans, it was gross!
