What about a red-letter day or similar? Kids these days have got so much STUFF, experiences are much better IMHO.
You can pick from a falcon adventure, gokarting, etc
Try Last Minute or google whatever you want to do.

For wrapping - It's all about the presentation.
Try lots of smaller boxes in a bigger one russian doll style with personalised wrapping paper made on a colour photocopier.
