I'd go dark, either matt slate or a big glossy slab of black granite.

Definitely marble or granite. Ie glossy and classy, but not one flat colour. What other colours are in your room?

The walls are a darkish green with white doors, windows ceiling etc. We want to redo the floor in a really dark brown.

That sounds like it would be a dark room but it's an old house. really high ceilings and a huge bay window in the front.

I've no idea what it's called (or where it comes from) but I've seen a gorgeous granite that was basically dull red but had flecks of cream and shimmery green in it. The green looked like chips of dark translucent jade. I just stood in the shop and stroked it....
