Emergency. I need to make FLYERS quickly and cheaply. But how?

My dh is doing a community theatre project with kids.

It has been harder than he thought to organise so it looks like we'll be lucky to break even and we may even make a loss.

So, any ideas on how I can make flyers cheaply and quickly (I think I have a 48 hour deadline). I only have Paint on the computer. Can I download a picture then put text in it? Or are there copyright issues?

Any help would be great.

It would be better to get a pic from a source which allows you to use it?

who are you targetting? where are you putting the flyers?

spidermama · 08/08/2006 14:06

Hi. Thanks for the responses. Cappucino how do I know which sources allow me to use their stuff?

The flyers are targetting anyone who might want to come and see some 9 - 19 year olds do their take on a Shakespeare comedy at a decent Brighton theatre. I think teenagers and parents would be interested as well as people in the biz. It's A Midsummernight's Dream, so leafy, flowery and possibly psychedelic images would be good.

Ruby when you say Clipart do you mean the stuff which Microsoft has with Windows? I worry it'll be overused, but I don't know. I'm hoping to make up a flyer on the computer, then email it to the printers. I assume that's possible?

could you scan in a drawing or a photo of the cast in a pose or something? wouldn't use any old image for copyright reasons. Would have thought one of the kids could do a passable asses head for you?

Cappucino · 08/08/2006 14:14

can the theatre do an email out for you ? do they have an email database of people interested in children's theatre? do they have a marketing dept which is giving you some support

if it's a 'look' you're after rather than a pic you could just use a mad font for the headline but check your printers have the font as well

you're going to be safer driving a hard copy over to the printers if at all possible

do the printers have a design service inhouse? maybe they can provide a pic/ help? if you're paying you might as well pay a tiny bit extra to have it look good, ineffective flyers are just a waste of money

maazaa · 08/08/2006 14:16

Have you got Microsoft Publisher in Office? It has good template wizard.

Cappucino · 08/08/2006 14:17

are you doing okay with the text? cat me if you need a second eye

(not to be patronising but this is my job)

spidermama · 08/08/2006 14:27

Cappucino thanks for that offer. I'll crack on with the text now and CAT it to you. I'd really appreciate the help.

cappucino, is there a website or something with free pictures I'd be allowed to use?

How can I find images I'm allowed to use?

DH wants some kind of leafy, oaky thing, perhaps with a psychedelic feel because of all the potions in the play.

OP posts:
Cappucino · 08/08/2006 14:57

spider I don't know of a website since I usually use designers

do you know anyone who you can ask to do a quick doodle for you? or maybe ask a designer at your printers?

what does your dh usually do in terms of images etc? or is this a new thing for you?

MrsBadger · 08/08/2006 14:59

any good ? is copyright free

will keep rummaging but don't normally work to this tight a timeframe!

Cappucino · 08/08/2006 14:59

I imagine you've done lots of press work etc in order to let people know?

fairyfly · 08/08/2006 15:00

I'll do you a leafy oaky design if you give me this evening, it wouldn'ty take long, then you could layer the typography

fairyfly · 08/08/2006 15:02

If you havre a scanner, scan the image of a leaf you like the look of, layer it, change the opacity so it's subtle and not too harsh

spidermama · 08/08/2006 15:14

Fairyfly, I don't have a scanner. I don't know what you mean when you say 'layer it' and 'change the capacity' but it sounds very impressive. Could you really do me a design? Is this your field then? I'd make sure you got a credit on the flyer & in any programme for the show. It's on at the Old Market in Brighton. I'd be happy to do an energy swap of some sort.

Cappucino this is indeed a new thing for dh. He normally works for people but this is an attempt at his own venture. It's becoming clear he won't make any money out of it first time round at least so we're trying to cut our losses whilst still doing it as well as possible. He has a great bunch of enthusiastic kids and my dh is, though I say so myself, one of the best people in the country at doing Shakespeare with kids. I'm always nagging him to do more of it instead of constantly chasing crappy tv acting work which is so hard to get albeit well paid.

Anyway, I digress.

I can do the backgorund design if you want to take care of the rest, well i'll give it a shot of course it may not be what you are looking for. Could you give me some key words or ideas on how you would like it, the name of the play maybe. I don't mind playing about later as it helps me relax but would be after 6 ish when the kids have eaten.

fairyfly · 08/08/2006 15:24

I'm studying Graphic Design by the way.

Cappucino · 08/08/2006 15:35

if he is going to do more of it he could do with a few marketing skills

there's an australian website here which is worth a look at when you have a minute (maybe not now!) or the Arts Marketing Association might be worth joining for a bit not least because they send you a big marketing planner poster when you join, there are also networking meetings, and they sell basic arts marketing guidebooks

spidermama · 08/08/2006 15:44

Fairy, that would be fantastic.

The flyer's mainly aimed at teenagers. They're doing their own editted, musical version of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with songs and tunes from popular culture. It's called 'Dreaming' and as soon as my kids stop asking me to do things for them I'll be working on the wording with dh.

If you don't know the play, it's basically a love comedy set in woodland in midsummer which includes mind altering love drugs, fairies and woodland imps and young couples falling in and out of love.

DH is an old raver and a tree and plant lover so he likes the psychedelic nature images which are on so many trancey, clubbing flyers. Any sort of nice foliage would make for a good background though. Something a bit hippyish and woodstockish maybe. I'm totally open tO suggestions though.

Cappucino I'm hoping to send the text to you to check for me. I'm sure you know what it's like trying to work with kids at home and I have five today all 7 and under so it's even slower than usual. In fact, dh is currently hosing ds4's poo off the inflatable sofa in the garden which they'd all been playing on. Nice!

spidermama · 08/08/2006 15:54

Cappucino thanks for those. I'm putting them in dh's favourites so he can have a look at them. Believe it or not he has only just learned to use the computer. It's a revelation for him.

Just had ten minutes, you can guide me as much as you want if i'm totally off the mark. They look better printed and enlarged and also need to be faded depending on what you decide to do on the top.
But if you like one and want it changing or like none and want to be a bit more specific let me know as i am doing anything apart from tackling housework and children today as i have had enough.

here

Not even sure that link will work as i have never used photobucket online.

spidermama · 08/08/2006 18:56

FAIRYFLY!!!! They're great!

You're so clever. DH likes them very much too. We like the first one best of all because it's the leafiest. Really lovely. They're much better than the ideas we had which were probably slightly dated fractal type trancey things.

I'm still desperately trying to get a chance to work on the text. I think the first pic will be great with the text on top. I love the subtle quotes over the design too.

Can we really use it then?

Excuse my stupidity but I'd like to put it into Paint to write the text in. Can I get it straight from the link you sent and work on it in paint?

Also would you like a credit on the flyer design and if so how should it be worded? (eg, Flyer design by Fairyfly?)

OP posts:
spidermama · 08/08/2006 18:58

Fairy ignore my questions abot getting it into paint as I've worked it out.

It looks great.

OP posts:
fairyfly · 08/08/2006 19:03

I'll send it you by email if you want then you can get it on paint. just send your add to bhuna at msn dot com, if you want it fading or tweaking or a colour change let me know. V pleased you like it. Maybe i should think of a business email add to stick on it

spidermama · 08/08/2006 19:10

I've emailed you Fairy.
