I read a statistic today that said one in every four children in Britain lives below the poverty line.
Can somebody please tell me how this is defined?

hatwoman, there are plenty of people who are living 10 to a room in Britain today. We are currently 6 people in a 2 bedroom flat.

Completely agree with Caligula - poverty is relative and has everything to do with social inclusion / exclusion

you'll find plenty of people in similar living conditions here, fistful. plenty.

and people who can't drink the water coming out of their taps b/c it's contaminated w/dead pigeons - but no one helps them get hold of clean water to drink.

on 'social workers' there was one woman w/only one leg who was still having to hop to her 3rd floor flat.

there were 5 of them in a one-bed.

it was only after a gang of youths mistook her son for someone else and broke down the door to kill him - they were fortunately unsuccessful - that the council rehoused them in a two-bed tower block w/lift access.

Not sure where we fit in, we have most of the luxuries ie dishwasher & tumble dryer but have removed the plugs to remove the temptation. Have been threatened with utility disconnection & fitting of prepayment meters which would cost us nearly £300 on top of what we allready owe to the utility provider. Wish I could work more hours but adequate/affordable childcare is a real issue for us. Part of this is probably our own fault fir getting into debt before we had the children but now we are stuggling because I bring in 1/3 of my previous salary finances are a right mess and I cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel anymore. If you look at our income it looks quite good but infact there is only just enough money to pay th bills and put food on the table. Thank god for generous friends with older children who are happy to pass the clothes on is all I can say. Christ knows where we are goiung to find the money for school shoes and uniform for dd in sept though.
