Your photographs - are they all neatly placed in an album or are they like mine?

Before the days of digital camera, I have a huge black bag full of photographs and negatives that I still haven't found a home for. It was my intention on maternity leave (over 7 years ago !) to sort them out. They are still in the same place.

Is anyone else as disorganised as me. And any tips as to where to start sorting them

Sigh!

Sigh................. I knew there was something I hadn't done!

The photos taken before we got digital are in albums. My digital photos are in albums on my computer, and named. Soem are printed and are in an album for DD. Others are still in their envelope thing they came in waiting form me to scrapbook them. Have only recently started though and I am slow!

charliecat · 28/07/2006 16:14

I have about 40 full albums all labeled and dated
Cant be that arsed nowadas so dont bother with the labelling bit, just scribble the year in the front.
Have boxes from woolies you can buy for the rest of them, so although they are not sorted they look like they are. like this but cheaper in woolies

We still use film (my dh runs a processing lab and is very old school) so I have piles of negatives as well as photos - we take about 2 films a month.
I used to put them into beautiful albums with tissue paper and photo corners but it took forever so I have now changed to using slip in albums. The idea being that as soon as I get a film back I put the good ones straight in whilst the spare photos go into a box and the negs get a slip of paper dating them and go into another box. I am months behind at the moment because the house is chaotic with builders. But Imust get up to date before the next baby comes or it really will take forever.
The hardest thing is getting them into chronological order. It really frustrates me when I finish an album then see some things which don't flow (ie children playing with birthday presents before their birthday photos). I am very anal when it comes to this.

Never have got round to putting in albums but have vaguely sorted them.

I used loads of A5 size brown envelopes and sorted into groups, either by the main person in the photo or the family group. Then a few extra categories like holidays; scenery; animals; friends weddings etc. Then the envelopes are piled in a drawer.

Strangely it sort of works as I can find most individual photos within about 3 minutes by narrowing down which envelope it is likely to be in.

handlemecarefully · 28/07/2006 19:47

No - not in albums and it pains me. It's one of the jobs I shall do when the children are at school and I have more than 10 seconds to myself

juuule · 28/07/2006 20:24

Ours are in boxes in the loft. Might sort them out one day. Some don't have anything written on the back and we get mixed up over which child it's a picture of . Some of them are extremely alike at the same age.

Even my digital ones are in a virtual black i.e all over the various PCs

SaintGeorge · 28/07/2006 20:32

Not actually a good idea to write on the back of photos, it can damage them. You can get special pens if you really want to or use pencil but never ordinary biro.

naswm · 28/07/2006 21:23

me too sparkler. I also have 1,000s od digital pics stored on discs or online that hjavenbt been printed up.

ocd · 28/07/2006 21:24

i have the best ones in an album
i do it once a year

FrannyandZooey · 28/07/2006 21:25

I do that too, cod. Except I do it once every 5 years. And, erm, I haven't actually started doing it yet.

ocd · 28/07/2006 21:26

poof

Sparkler1 · 29/07/2006 00:16

Saint George - I like the brown envelope idea. At least it would get me started. If they are in order in envelopes I would enjoy moving them into albums more.

Handlemecarefully - When I didn't do the job on my maternity leave - I said I would do it when dd2 was at preschool and never did. She starts primary school September so maybe I'll try again then. You watch they'll be doing their GSCEs and my piccies will still be stuffed in that same old black bag.

Sparkler, we moved onto digital about 18 months ago but have shed loads of pics and negatives in baskets.

I bought DH a photo album for Christmas 1998 - a hint towards getting it sorted out. In a fit of enthusiasm, we then bought 4 more albums in January sales 1999, so we could tackle it once and for all...

...all five of those albums are still empty (wince) on our living room shelves. But we went through all our pics about 2 years ago and put post-its on the ones we want to put in the albums....does that count as progress? (a-hem!)

For us, it would need the commitment of a whole weekend, without child, to just do it.

i.e. it's never gonna happen......
