Do you think it is possible to change your opinion of someone entirely?

If you have known them for some time, say a few years. Or would every encounter during that time, and your perception of it, make it too difficult?

Yes! I met MIL before I met DH, I used to love her and thought she was a very sweet, kind and selfless woman... Ha!

CarolinaMoose · 22/07/2006 11:24

lol, I've gone through a similar process with my MIL over the years Choc

I find it hard to backtrack if I've made it obv that I don't like someone even if I later realise they're ok.

And once I dislike someone, I dislike everything about them, rather irrationally...

MamaG · 22/07/2006 11:26

I'm opposite to poisson - I like everyone when I first meet them then think "you know what, you're a bit of a twat actually"

MrsAnthonyKiedis · 22/07/2006 11:30

pmsl at MamaG. CarolinaMoose you sound exactly like me in this respect.

poisson what about beyond the first meeting, say several years of every little thing about them irritating you, because of this dislike? Is it still possible to turn it around?

Imo your opinion can change of someone you previously disliked because you yourself go through a process of change.

fullmoonfiend · 22/07/2006 11:44

I read a theory once that when you take a voilent dislike to someone (as opposed to them having done something specific which changes your good opinion of them) it's because you subconciously recognise something about them in yourself, perhaps a personality trait you are not particularly proud of, for example. Does that make sense? I don't neccessarily agree per se, but there have been times when I've thought ''god, they're so annoying because they talk so much.'' And then the uncomfortable feeling butts in that atually, I talk too much too....

CarolinaMoose · 22/07/2006 11:52

FMF, I've got a horrible feeling that's part of my problem with MIL . She reminds me of me at my feebler moments, but she's like that all the time, x 10.

ChocFudgeCake · 22/07/2006 12:39

Owch! I hope that theroy is not valid! Mmmh, but let me think... Well, it might be that if I didn't have any selfcontrol, I would be like my MIL. I feel sick.
A bit like you said CarolinaMoose.

I don't know if you can change your opinion of someone after years

I find things tend to just get worse and worse if you didn't utterly like them to start with, until they piss you off so badly you can't stand the sight of them.

But hey, that's just me
