Signature scent - help me find one!

OK, I'm nearly 35 and it's time I had a signature scent that isn't Body Shop White Musk! So, O wise Mumsnetters, source of all knowledge, oracles of wisdom...I'll tell you what I like, smell-wise, and you can tell me what I'd like, perfume-wise. Hate going to perfume counters unless I know what I'm after.

I like: citrus, particularly grapefruit, seaside, fresh air, cut grass, clean washing, freshly laundered cotton.

Don't like: heavy musky, sandalwood etc. smells, or overpowering florals..nothing that smells like perfume actually (you know, that "Mums's perfume" smell!)

Any ideas? If I have a few suggestions I can go and ask for a squirt in Boots, rather than going in blind.

Used to wear Anais Anais but that's too flowery and talcum powdery now, have some Paul Smith for Women which is OK, but still not me. Thought I liked Clinique's Happy so bought a big bottle but it smelled funny on me. Liked one they did in Next which was citrussy/freesias but they've stopped making it.

So...help please!!!!

Magie Noir is lovely as well but think it's quite heady - whoch is why I like it. Love all the overpowering musky ones

I wear Paul Smith, lovely.

DKNY, Eau d'Hadrien and Eau du Sud (last two both Annick Goutal) do it for me, Martha Moo. Think we have similar tastes in scents. Trouble is, the Annick Goutal ones don't last very long (and are not cheap - but almost half the price in Paris or the US). I got Eau Fraiche de Caron for Valentine's Day, which is also loooovelyyyy.

Plenty to go at there!!!!

Went in Boots and asked for a go at Chanel no.19 and l'Eau d'Issey. Preferred the Issey one, I think. Woman was horrid though and I was put off asking to try any more. She was one of those "Do you think I've nothing better to do than squirt perfume on little sticks for you..oh that's my job...well, you're interrupting my chat with my colleagues" type

Going to have to have a trip somewhere big...our Boots has only just switched to decimal currency and computerised tills and doesn't have any big table of testers - you have to ask and be grimaced at.

Thanks for all suggestions - going to write a list and keep it in my bag. Also found loads of perfume on ebay, new testers etc. Watch this space!

This is lovely and fresh .

This I wear during the day a real wake up call in morning.

MY favourite and most sophisticated is my Joseph, Im on the 5th bottle!! I still have the original bottle they had years ago which I bought in the ZONE at Harvey Nicks!!

marthamoo · 06/03/2004 14:24

Those lancome ones sound gorgeous too, melsy. Wish you could get testers more easily.

Trust me the Aroma Tonic is wonderful, I am VERY fussy with fragrances. If I find a good one I buy bottle after bottle!!

I also wear Ghost Deep night in a purple moon shape bottle , very sensual smell , but a little sweet and spicy so not sure you will like it.

Clinique's Happy Heart is nice - not as flowery as Happy (which was my wedding fragrance) I bought some for my dd last birthday as it's light and pretty but not "cheap" smelling. My signature scent is Chanel's Coco but I also have Chance, Mademoiselle and No 5. Also Green Tea by Elizabeth Arden is very fresh smelling - nice for a summers day. Also like Addict by Christian Dior but it leaves "scorch" marks on my neck. Really liked Ultra Violet (Paco Rabanne) last Xmas and bought some complete with free gift set (which has never been opened). Idea for free April swap maybe?

I also like the "O Oui" by Lancome, but do not relish the thought of going round smelling of wee (well, not till I'm in my 80s anyway)!!
