cot or bed? - general survey of opinions

Just wondering type question.
Until I came on this forum I thought that the 'norm' for moving kids out of cots and onto mattresses/low beds was about 9 months, or whenever they could climb out the cot. This is just from what my family has always done.

However reading other threads I realise that most don't move their kids till about 2 years old. Someone even suggested it was dangerous to do it earlier. I don't get why.

Ok I do think it is up to the parent to decide when their child goes into a bed. I wouldn't be happy keeping a child of mine in a cot after about 9/10 months (this is when my ds was moved) as I would worry about them falling from that distance (i.e. top of cot side to floor).

Any opinions?

i'd be surprised if a 9 month old could climb out of a cot!

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 18:09

how on earth would a 9 month old scale the sides of a cot and fall out?

ilovecaboose · 12/07/2006 18:09

They always have done here.

have "they" ?

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 18:11

a child of 9 months is less safe in a bed because they might roll over and fall out.

they can't fall out of a cot.

i'd be interested to know how many 9 months you know that have fallen out of cots

LucyCampCat · 12/07/2006 18:12

depends on the child and the parents - dd1 was in a bed at 2.5, dd2 was 3.1, it was a cot bed so plenty big enough.

Did your 9 month try to climb out of a cot?

tassis · 12/07/2006 18:12

I'd keep in a cot as long as possible.

Ds came out his at 2 years 9months

ilovecaboose, whereabouts are you from? just curious as it honeslty isn't the norm in the uk.

realise I sounded a bit accusatory in my first couple of posts which I didn't mean to be, just really surprised at your post that's all

I'd be amazed at a 9 month old climbing out of its cot

DS moved out at 2

DD still in hers at 2.2

Seriously does our family just breed abnormally athletic babies? Me, my mum, my aunties just heard the thump and found babies on floor, never actually caught them so not sure how.

I didn't really worry about her falling out of her cot until she started doing it. She was nearly 3 when she did and I moved her to a bed. I wouldn't have been happy with her in a bed at 9/10 months or probably even at 2. She's such a wriggler at night that she would have fallen out or got her head stuck between the bed and bed guard or something! At least now she's 3, when she falls out she gets herself back into bed and my precious sleep isn't disturbed .
