I haven't been able to for ages misdee! I was pg with ds2 just 8 months after having ds1 and then when ds2 was 10 months old I went to give and was told I was anaemic! Then I got put on iron and told not to give for 6 months! It is now past the 6 months and just waiting on the give blood people to visit again (live the the sticks and they only come every few months!) sigh!

noddyholder · 03/07/2006 16:39

really brilliant generous thing to do though as croc ks like me really rely on it!

schneebly · 03/07/2006 16:43

It is sooo painless to do - I just wish more people would consider doing it. I am quite shocked by some of the statistics misdee has quoted re. blood and organ donation! You even get tea and a biscuit!

albatros · 03/07/2006 16:46

I am one of people who always intended to but never got round to donating blood. I now can't donate as I recieved a life saving transfussion following the birth of dd2.
I try to encourage evryone I know to give blood I know it is a personal choice and I wish I had donated in the years previously.
What I am trying to say is THANKYOU to all you good people for giving the time, commitment and blood to help others, without you I might not be here.
Even if you can't donate now Misdee your blood will be appricated when you can as I am sure you know.
THANKYOU

i've given blood twice in my life but haven't for years. it's a nice thing to do and I must look into doing it again

schneebly · 03/07/2006 16:53

albatross - I was like that too and didn't get round to starting to give blood until I was 22 (when my mum was ill). It just hadn't occured to me before that Needs more publicity. Glad you are okay.

misdee · 03/07/2006 16:55

i just wanted a cuppa and bikkie really

no setriously, idid want to do it, i explain it to the kids as well, and dd1 was thinking she was going to do it bless her little sweet heart.

they are in the area about 4-6times a year, its at the community hall near dd1 school, so its not like its even out of my way. so as soon as dd3 detaches herself from my norks i'll be there.

i give blood regularly, last time when i was 4 weeks pregnant and didn't realise. was intending to start again but didn't know you couldn't do it if you were still breastfeeding. i intend breastfeeding until dd is 18 months or until she weans herself. does that mean i can't donate until i've completely stopped b/f?

Furball · 03/07/2006 16:57

I can't donate either as I've suffered a brain haemorrhage so it's not advised.

misdee · 03/07/2006 16:58

yes warthog. the nurses went to check as they knew it was 9months after birth, but they said as dd3 is still fluids from me, they wouldnt want to take anymore by donating blood cos i may faint.

I wish I could give blood again (but had a transfusion so I can't).

warthog · 03/07/2006 17:02

ok thanks misdee. bit disappointing...

misdee · 03/07/2006 17:03

tis a bit, but i guess atm my health comes first. but will do it soon, i promise.

Darn. I thought it was 9 months too rather than a separate bf exclusion. I haven't been able to for ages (holidays in malarial areas, then when we'd finished the exclusion period for that I was TTC which took a while, then pregnant, now bf) and I've moved in the meantime so will probably need to track them down when I get to that point (although only likely to be small gap between stopping bf #1 and starting to TTC #2, so it could be a while).

Pixiefish · 03/07/2006 17:21

i'm not allowed cos of previous transfusions. would love to though but am eternally grateful (for my life) to the people who do it

Miaou · 03/07/2006 17:23

I'd love to give blood but have never been able to yet!! Before having the kids I was under 7.5 stone so they wouldn't take it, went back down to that after dd1 and 2, am now above it but still b/f and ttc ... at this rate I'll never manage it! Dh goes every time tho' and has got a silver card thingy for having given about 10 bodiesworth or something

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2006 17:24

When I tried to give bloodthe form said you can't for a year after a new tattoo or piercing....din't you recently have you tingue peirced Misdee?

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2006 17:25

misdee · 03/07/2006 17:26

Miaou · 03/07/2006 17:33

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2006 17:40

My memory isn't what it used to be though Misdee...check it out before you take my word for it 100%.

Deffo remeber it being mentioned but it could be 1 yr...6 months...5 years...1 week....57 years...Who knows??

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2006 17:42

miaou.

moondog · 03/07/2006 18:12

I tried last year (took a lot of courage,I hate needles) but am not able do because I lived in PNG for years (malaria hotspot) and have travelled in other infested areas since.
They told me they will give me a ring in 2012.

My sister donated in France. They had wine afterwards.

Freckle · 03/07/2006 18:15

I've been donating for years (although my tally here is lower than my total because I spent some time abroad and my donations there don't count). I've taken the boys to watch - although I fear that might have put them off for life.

Going again next week, although with England now out of the World Cup perhaps they won't get the slump in donations they were expecting.
