Do you have a conservatory? Oooooh I'd love a conservatory.

At the moment we live in a beautiful 4 bedroom detached house. All I keep thinking about at the moment is how lovely it would be to have a conservatory. I'm even considering moving from here into a 3 bedroom house with a conservatory instead. We don't have the room to build one onto the back of our current house.
Do you have a conservatory in your home and if so do you think they are worthwhile? Do you use it very often?

i don't have one but dream of having a house that did.

Piffle · 29/06/2006 15:24

I hope you like looking through dirty windows or are happy to paya window cleaner wekly, or a die hard window cleaner yourself
I would not have one GIVEN I swear - I'd rather build an extension

sparkler1 · 29/06/2006 15:25

Hey Piffle that never crossed my mind before. Cleaning? I don't do cleaning!!

oliveoil · 29/06/2006 15:26

are they not too hot in summer and too cold in winter?

Piffle · 29/06/2006 15:26

they are filthy honest they never look clean.

Feistybird · 29/06/2006 15:37

Love ours - it's a wooden one, yes the windows do need cleaning, but not done the insides for months, but then I am a slattern.

It's great for lots of things, for watching thunderstorms, for the kids playing in the winter when a bit of sun makes it really warm. We have a large tree outside however that gives us shade from about midday through to early evening.

BROWNY · 29/06/2006 16:00

I absolutely love ours!! We have quite a small living room/dining room so the additon of our conservatory has made a massive difference. I love to sit in there having breakfast and a cuppa in the morning, it's so lovely and bright in there - it feels like a difference house completely now! My dd2 loves to sit in there and read quitely aware from her siblings.

It's main advantage right now is that I get to sit in a room without a television and without the World Cup being jammed down my throat (and ears!). So definately a thumbs up from me!

expatinscotland · 29/06/2006 16:01

what the hell do you do w/a conservatory besides fill it w/fugly furniture?

nah, i'd rather have a crappy terrace w/a yard.

Whizzz · 29/06/2006 16:03

Yes and I love it....I also love my GAZEBO...makes you sit & drink wine though

BROWNY · 29/06/2006 16:04

expatinscotland - it's a good job I don't offend easily , I have lovely furniture and lamps in my conservatory. The huge plus of a conservatory is the feeling of enjoying the garden but being nice and warm! There is nothing you can say to make me un-love my conservatory!

sparkler1 · 29/06/2006 16:05

I sit and drink wine anyway . No need for me to have a conservatory for that reason. I still want one - I can handle the dirt.

oh god these are really making me LAUGH

except I don't have any of the things mnentioned, not even chocolate

BROWNY · 29/06/2006 16:07

Sparkler - I find I can drink far more wine when I am sitting outside in the garden under my patio heater! , p.s. they don't get that dirty at all!

expatinscotland · 29/06/2006 16:08

After a few glasses of wine, I can conjure up a conservatory that would blow away everyone's conservatory. All in my own little mind . . .

sparkler1 · 29/06/2006 16:08

LOL!

Sorry guys - just read my original post on this thread and realised how snobby I sounded. I promise you I'm not like that in RL. Am feeling a bit about it now. Thanks for the other threads though - they are brilliant. I couldn't stop LOL when I kept seeing a new thread popping up. . Guess I deserved it really.

I hated my conservatory in my old 3 bedroomed detached house - too hot in summer, too cold in winter, never really sat in it just used it to dry washing in summer!!

Now moved to a crappy terrace with a yard (yes, really) which I much prefer!

Twiglett · 29/06/2006 16:44

why don't you just take off the back wall and add floor to ceiling glass doors?

crunchie · 29/06/2006 16:59

I have just had one built and I LOVE IT!!!!! It was expensive £12k, but I know we will live in it. We only had 2 downstairs rooms before - one kitchen/diner, one large living room, so this is fab.

Yes you do need to clean the windows, BUT you can lower your standards My dh does it every fortnight or so, takes 30 mins. His outside jobs are mowing lawn and conservatory windows.

We have the best furniture in there chocolate sofa But we are still slowly getting other bits.

It is so lovely to sit in there in the evening, glass of wine in hand. It does get hot in the morning, but it is north facing, so by about 1pm it is in shade.

MadamePlatypus · 29/06/2006 20:12

Nice sofa crunchie. I am imagining that Cotswold whatsits took the photograph in your conservatory? I like the pink plant.

iota · 29/06/2006 20:14

my conservatory has 8 large tomato plants in it

I'm looking forward to the harvest

chipkid · 29/06/2006 20:16

just pulled ours down to build an extension with a normal roof. Too hot in the summer (even with blinds) and too cold in winter

stay where you are !!

sparkler1wantsaconservatory · 29/06/2006 20:18
