One Friday, at midnight, dh was alseep upstairs with ds1. Ds2 was sleeping downstairs on the sofa. I was downstairs just shutting off lights, checking doors etc ready to go up when I passed the front door. We have a blurry window and net curtain on the front door so you can't see out clearly but I noticed that a car had pulled up outside the house and the brake lights came on. Then someone started knocking on the front door.

I was terrified, grabbed ds2 and fled upstairs to wake dh. We looked out the window and saw the car and a man at the door. Dh went downstairs and yelled through the door "What do you want?". I thought we were all about to die, that a gang was about to break in to rob us. The man said "taxi". There are a few roads in the area with the same name as ours so could be an honest mistake. Dh said "We didn't call for a taxi" and the man went to his car and after a while drove off.

When I told this to friends and relatives, some thought I had totally over-reacted and shouldn't have been scared, while others admitted they would habe been terrified as well. I was just wondering what the MN view was.

I'm always the one who answers the door at odd times. If there is a noise in the middle of the night I investigate because dh is a lazy arse and pretends not to hear! If neighbours are noisy, it's me who leans out and yells at them to shut up. I don't mind doing these things because I am so much better at them than dh!

dont think I would have grabbed my kids and run upstairs, bit over dramatic. Although I suppose it depends where you live

Used to get it a lot where I used to live, taxis knocking. if it was a taxi wouldm't you have been able to tell instantly cos of the big sticker with th company name on it?

And my stomach lurches anytime there's a noise outside the house btw! I'm a wimp too.

Garfieldsgirl the taxi just looked like a normal car, but most of the cab companies' cars round here don't have any signs or stickers on them.

It just seemed so weird, I always get suspicious if a car even stops outside for any length of time if it's late.
