This blooming number keeps calling, and as soon as I answer it hangs up. I want to phone back and give them a piece of my mind, they've been calling for days and days and almost always when ds is asleep and it is P!ING ME OFF. But I don't want to call if it's some high charging crap that's hoping you'll call back to get them lots of money! Angry
Is there a way you can find out whose number it is without calling? Or ask BT to block the number? TIA

What does silent call guard actually do, 2Happy?

I had about six silent calls yesterday.

2Happy · 03/06/2006 15:31

Silent calls are supposed to be computer generated calls from call centres - the computer dials loads of numbers, but there aren't always people free to talk to you, so the computer calls you, you answer, and the phone goes dead. This call guard is a bit like the telephone preference service, it's a database of people who don't want cold calls. Unfortunately, it's voluntary for companies to decide whether to look at the database, so it won't stop 100% of calls.
WWW - that was what I had been afraid of when I was thinking of calling them back and shouting at them. As it is, every time I've called them they've never answered...cowards! Grin

I'm just wondering what Gillian76 would have said to them if they'd had answered.

"Hello, you're calling a Mumsnetter called 2Happy and waking her son up, please desist!"

01707 is hatfield/welwyn garden city and normally a number starting with 8 is a NTL number.

paule1948 · 28/08/2006 17:25

The phone number 01707 873629 is for Everest Ltd Potters Bar. Hope this helps

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 28/08/2006 18:25

Just sign up to the Telephone Preference Survey for free and then when anyone phones you tell them it's actually illegal for them to be calling you. (Takes about 3m to kick in though so no immediate help but silence is golden )

littleducks · 28/08/2006 18:36

just signed up to that but is 3m months or min? I'm hoping min but suspecting months....

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 28/08/2006 21:56

Shall we all phone up Everest anyway just to annoy them?

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 28/08/2006 21:57

3 months for the new lists without your number on to circulate I'm afraid.

I rather suspect this is a machine at Hertfordshire University. If BT are unhelpful (which is the norm), give them a call.

paule1948 · 28/08/2006 23:09

hi everyone
I've sent Everest an email saying "Under Government legislation introduced on 1st May 1999 and replaced on 11th December 2003 by the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls."

I see that it does sound a bit like a "silent" cold call, but normally they withold the number so you can't easily complain.

But I think dinosaurs has it right. A few thousand calls to their freephone number 0800 010 123 might help.

I was woken up by one cold calling mobile phone company recently. They were really quite upset when I looked up the directors home phone number and rang there.
Really not happy at all.
