Generally just a figurehead for the charity and don't do much beyond an odd visit (esp if royalty!) some do loads though, but at v senior level

...oh and you get LOADS of coverage if one of them pops their clogs in a Paris road accident, I've found.

Quite often drawn in by personal circumstances in the case of medical/health campaigning charities. SANDS patrons for example are there for the saddest of reasons and are very hands-on.
