Urgent help needed - mites in a baby's bedroom???

Can anyone advise which insecticide to use - a friend has discovered her baby's bedroom is infested by bird mites - Rentokil (or their cheaper cousins) want over £100 to clean the infestation and my friend can't afford it.

Has anyone any advise for her??

She is distraut and extremely upset as she has been to the Dr's 3 times and had various diagnosis of chicken pox and Hand foot & mouth

At least now she knows what it is - but desparatly needs help

Ring the council. Local environmental health should be able to sort it cheaper or at the very least give advice.

She did and they said it was her problem and reccommended rentokil Sad

Really? Bloody hell, they have changed their remit over the years then.

When you say bird mites do you mean a mite that lives on a bird or the little blighters that are around when there is a bird nest nearby? The ones from the nest are carpet beetles and can be got rid of quite easily.

I don't know they are coming through a vent (from a nest?) and biting the baby (who is now in another room but absolutly covered in bites)

Bird Mites
Remove any dead birds that you find. If nests are empty (i.e. no eggs or young birds in them), remove and dispose of them. If the nesting season is over and only adults remain, you may remove the nest, provided the birds are not harmed.

To reduce bird mites that may migrate indoors, spray an insecticide effective against mites, such as bifenthrin. Treat outside around windows, doors, and other possible points of entry.

Caution: Read all product directions very carefully before buying insecticides and again before applying. If you cannot treat an outside area without harming an occupied nest, do not spray. Leave the nest alone until it is abandoned; then you can spray the house if mites are still a problem.

Scotts Bug Clear, Bayer Sprayday Greenfly Killer Plus, Doff All-In-One Garden Pest Killer

Would also recommend a steam cleaner if she wants to thoroughly clean the room - effective against lots of mite varities. Just blasts the little suckers to oblivion.

I know this is an old thread but I'm wondering if the OP is still around and could tell us how this resolved.
We have a bird or rodent mite infection in our house and the pest control people we have spoken to are keen to just spray the entire house. I suppose I'm after reassurance that this works. We have no idea where the original infestation comes from.
There is a lot of conflicting information on the internet and we are trying to talk to people who have actual experience of this situation.
