HOW DO I GET RID OF A VIRUS FROM MY PC?

Says it all in the title really but being a total idiot when it comes to these bloody things I have no idea.

We do have some kind of anti-virus something or another on here which comes with the internet provider but obviously that wasn't enough. I've had loads of really odd emails today which I assume is part of it.

One more question.....if this virus has attached itself to my address book and sending stuff out why hasn't DH hasn't got anything from me?

I am very confused.........Thanks a million for any advise you can send.

you could try downloading AVG here - it's free anti virus software which i've always found to be very good

the download should contain all the up-to-date virus profiles and clean up the virus when you run a full virus scan

or go and look at www.symantec.com for latest news on viruses? don't know which virus you've got, but you may be able to identify it and download a utility which will get rid of it

What else is happening to make you suspect you have a virus .... ?

If it's only odd emails you are getting - have to replied to an unkown sender trying to remove your email from their list?
What these people do is make up a load of addresses and hope that they get someone ... if you respond, then they know that the email is active and then they bombard you with cr@p.
Best advise is DONOT respond to people you don't know/
have you opened an email with an attachment recently ... that's often how viruses get through.

What antivirus software do you have ? Can you remember the name of the software ? Is it Norton - as that's probably the most popular one ?

Thanks girls....crystaltips I have no clue what we have but when blueyonder(my ISP) called a while ago I asked if we had any anti-virus stuff and they said yes and that it would also to a good idea to download some extra(can't remeber which though) however it made it reallllly difficult to get into email and onto the internet without answering about 1000 question before hand so we un-installed(is that a real word?) it.............Opppppps!

Provided you've not opened any of the files attached to the odd emails, you should be fine. I've had about 10 this week and am not infected (I scanned to first odd looking one and then simply deleted all subsequent ones). If you delete the emails and empty the deleted files folder, they should be gone.

I've also had "delivery failure" notices for emails I haven't sent but since I know my virus definitions are up to date and my PC is virus free, I've ignored/delted these too.
