You will enjoy more random 'gifts' like this from Windoze than OS X. Honestly. If you hate it, when you get a chance, or when this PC has reached the end of its life, consider a move to OS X / Mac. It is a much easier system to use. I only repeat myself because I believe it to be true. I appreciate it has cost implications.

Anyway... to continue to offer some assistance...

Go to tucows.com and try and search for a Windows utility that manages the installation / removal of programs. Sometimes, the file / database that contains the list of installed apps c0cks up, and you are unable to uninstall a program... these might help you remove or subsequently reinstall your stuff...

PS - If you provide more detail about this 'box in the middle of the screen' I can continue to try and guess what this is or what to do to fix it... Is the rest of your screen the normal Windows environment ?

Katymac · 26/04/2006 22:19

It was a window with all bits of other windows in it - sort of fragments

Thanks I'll have a look tomorrow

But outside of this box, is the rest of Windows available / normal ?

(Just trying to understand if it's just your screen resolution that has been mucked up or if it is one isolated program / window)

Katymac · 27/04/2006 07:25

Yes everything apart from that is OK - and the box disappears each time I restart - but comes back if I try to open the programme (so I don't open the programme)

OK... it sounds like (for whatever reason) that window is locked at the current size, and can't be enlarged etc.

Is that right ?

I presume you have tried dragging corners / title bar etc. ?

One thing you can try which might work is to start the app and then use a keyboard shortcut to maximise it so you can see it properly / use it etc. (I'm assuming it's actually displaying something useful IYSWIM).

This is a long time ago for me (current Windoze experts do chime in pls) but I think if you select the window (ie. make it the focus / active window and then press ALT X you will have selected 'maximise' and so it might magically enlarge... (this assumes, for some reason the maximise / minimise buttons etc. are hidden or not working).

Possibly more logical... but...

Did he say what, specifically was up with it ?

Katymac · 28/04/2006 07:38

Yep - but I didn't understand it
