I offer her juice several times a day in an open cup, but she just cant do it, she holds it to her mouth, but does'nt purse her lips together to take a drink, and she seems surprised everytime it all spills down her front.

Well, ds can do a cup but not a straw, so imo they just develop those skills at different rates. I'm no expert, but we're not pushing the straw thing right now. Does she do a sippy cup okay?

Wouldnt worry. My ds is 2.6yrs and refuses to use an open cup but will drink with a straw.

mine could't until she went to playgroup and then peer pressure meant that she did, also she coped everyone else

Yes, sippy cup and straws she can do, just not an open cup, she also gets lots of practice in the bath, while trying to drink the water from a cup I rinse her hair withGrin

Hi waterfalls, sorry to bring things up from your other thread, but if it is the same dd who is clamping down, then an informal SALT consultation might be worthwhile. As the other posters have said, it is completely normal in itself (some children take longer than others in certain skills, don't I know it with my dd) and it is 99% not anything sinister. But one of the things the SALT was specifically checking in my dd was her ability to drink from an open cup.

It is up to you Smile Feel free to disregard me it you think it scaremongering. I don't mean it that way.

i don't know what sort of age they should be doing this by and children vary a lot anyway. My 14 month old willnot take drinks from any kind of cup, soft spout, doidy, nothing and never managed a bottle either. When she is thirsty she breastfeeds, she hets all her drinks by breastfeeding and always has. Its driving me mad. She would never take solids until nearly 9 months either and now still gags if its not really pureed stuff

not the same thing but my dd has cp so swallowing has always been a prob. one thing that I found that helped was a tomme tippe cup it had a lid (I think that you could put a wtraw in ) if you left the lid on and din't use a straw the liquid only came out slowly. this gave her time to swallow before the next bit, hope this makes sense
