thanks hulababy.

It turns out my bank does have a wills dept (well, a firm of solicitors in Sheffield) so I phoned them today. It'll be v straightforward until I have to go and see a Spanish solicitor anyway!

ps would still be v interested in a 2nd opinion though - we own no property which apparently makes things simpler.

Do you know the name of the solicitors SP? DH is in Sheffield so may know the person there who deals with wills. May well be able to tell you what he feels about the firm's reputation over here, etc.

SP - I have just spoken to DH so here goes:

He thinks it is probably Erwin Mitchell, a big firm in UK. It would be done by a department who just deals with straightforward wills (not bespoke) for banks (HSBC?). As they just do basic, non complicated and not bespoke wills it'd be a reasonably cheap opion for you too. He says that as far as he knows they are just fne at the straight forward stuff.

He thinks it would be pretty straightforward from what I have told from this thread. You should only need to see a spanish lawyer is you have spanish assets, such as property. Not being married doesn't alter the fact that you could have husband/wife style mirror wills if you wished. If your DP hasn't got parental responsibility you would need to appoint him as guardian for any children.

If he dealt with something like this he would still only charge the same price as I said before if simple and straightforward; oly charge more if both wills were completely different and complicated as it'd obviously mean your solicitor would have yo do more work.

I hope all that information helps you! If you want any more advice or info about it all let me know and I can keep asking DH!!!

What is a bespoke will?

Hulababy · 06/01/2004 19:55

One written entirely for you and tailored completely to your needs, rather thn just following a set template.

Unfortunately SP, DH doesn't no anyone personally who works in that department of Erwin Mitchell or he could have told you more. He asked at work if anyone in his department know too but they didn't. Sorry I can't offer more info about them.

Thanks hulababy!

I think I do need to see a Spanish solicitor anyway as I am resident in Spain and have a Spanish bank a/c - like I said I am almost sure I can just have a UK will with a couple of extra lines on it though.

Incidentally if your dh wants the work then email me - I would always rather use a small company than a large one. Possibly I'd be more of a PITA as a client than I'm worth though!

Feel free to use him SP if you want to. You might want to see how much your bank would charge first though as they may be cheaper than his quote. I will e-mail his details to you. He is good at his work and puts in a lot of effort, especially if I tell him 'has' to for this one!!!
