Just been into town with my daughter (11) and 9 year old ds.
We wandered into whsmith. DD notices me looking at the display which is the above mentioned magasines. Two women tit to tit (!) and various others . She laughed and said she had seen them the other day and so does my son.
I laugh and say its gross that they are at that height....eye level to a nine year old. ABOVE them on the stand is GQ and gay times - mens mags but obviously of a different inclination. The covers of them are just blokes - i did not notice if they were clad or not but i did not feel offended by them - nor did my kids start sniggering at them.
I think I am pretty liberal and I want my kids to feel like i am not an old fuddy duddy but I came away feeling that this was wrong. Years ago I moaned that they were literally at toddler height and now they are higher but not much. The content of the cover is just soft porn. Any one else feel this way or anyone know where I could go to try to instigate change. Those in agreement...What can we Do??

I don't find the likes of those magazines soft porn. They are male magazines just as women have their magazines. In fact I love reading Dh's FHM. Some of it is great fun.

I know nothing of the content it was just the covers that are soft porn.

Yes, I agree with you. I find the lad mag culture is not something I wish to have in my face (or my kids) everytime I walk into a shop.

FairyMum · 02/04/2006 17:48

The content is what I would consider pretty braindead. I guess 18 year-olds go through a phase reading them, but where I work men in their 30s read them too and enough said....

4blue1pink · 02/04/2006 19:58

I agree my ds is 13 and his friends think its cool - speaks volumes!

I'm sure there's just been some directive ordering stores to put these things up on the top shelf where they belong.

CODDYPANTS · 02/04/2006 20:08

was going to say

Tiptoppop · 02/04/2006 20:10

I used to work for one of the (ahem) "organisations' behind one of these things. Not on it, I hasten to add. But suffice to say it was the the type of cynical exploitative lowest-common-denominator thinking that hatched up these titles that also led to me jumping ship.

End of rant.

CODDYPANTS · 02/04/2006 20:12

I noticed this in my local shop and was about to complain.
I don't know what stopped me.
It's all just so crappy, that's my objection - I don't care about nudity but they make it all look so gross.
I wouldn't object to tits on the front of "Naturist Nockers" or similar.
But FHM etc seem to think it's clever in some way when really it's just a bit apthetic.

4blue1pink · 02/04/2006 21:00

My sentiment exactly Pruni you just put it better... Its not the nudity ...its just bloody degrading and i should not have to face it on a wet Sunday in my 'small-town smiths'
