How do you tell if your exhaust is about to fall off?

I was driving over a road hump and there was a noise from under the car towards the back. So I stopped and looked and there was nothing there. But now as I drive along, especially over humps, soomething is banging about it, not on the road, but sounds like coming from under the boot. Is this the exhaust? It LOOKS fine though.... The car is only 3 1/2 years old so I wouldn't expect it to be the exhaust, but I dont know anything about cars!

Anyone?

I really dont fancy a trip to Kwik Fit....

Doesnt really take much for one of the clips on an exhaust manifold to go really. It kinda depends on how you drive though Wink

Take it to Twit Fit, er i mean Kwik Fit.

No idea but at a guess, might be the end section of the exhaust. Maybe a bracket has loosened.

NASWM · 30/03/2006 16:37

Oh I was afraid you'd say that :( Are they quick though? I really dont fancy it. And is it expensive?

I wasn' driving recklessly. Honest guv....

I would get it checked out. My exhaust half fell off and wedged on the road couln't move the car and had to call out the AA.

NASWM · 30/03/2006 16:38

Does that mean a compltely new exhaust??

ooo forgot about the AA. Do you think I can call them anyway, or is that sort of thing not covered as it is not 'broken down'?

Definitely sounds like a bracket. I'd sort it out sooner rather than later, it's very boring (and with the kids very stressful) waiting for the breakdown people to rescue you when the damn thing falls off.

NASWM · 30/03/2006 16:40

Good point Serenity. Although DS1 is quite excited about meeting a mechanic...

Don't think the AA would cover it, but it shouldn't cost too much to just fix a bracket. In fact last time I went to Kwik Fit to have a bracket done they didn't charge me.

Thanks. The thought of waiting around in the garage with 2 youong kids fill me with dread. I will go in the morning. grrr

Can I scream for a bit? please?

aaaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhh

KwikFit really do what they say they do on the telly - and they do it quickly and cheaply.

Blu · 30/03/2006 16:56

It will take about 5 mins!

NASWM · 30/03/2006 16:57

really blu?

tbh i would ask them to check your shocks i have had two cars where the shocks have gone at the back and front and when the back ones went i was convinced i would see the exhaust on the floor behind everytime i went over a bump
