Best place to live with children?

car25 · 25/03/2006 20:56

Very fed up of high house prices in the south east.

So now considering relocating, but where is the nicest/safest place to live and bring up children? Looking for good schools, friendly local community, would prefer village location but would consider small town.

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Wiltshire.

Low crime rates, good state schools. Lots of nice villages / small towns to choose from.

Otherwise, Lincolnshire has all this too!

Highlands of Scotland :)

expatinscotland · 25/03/2006 21:38

Not here unless you've got bags of money.

ScummyMummy · 25/03/2006 21:39

London. Lots going on, good public transport, pavements- I hate country places without pavements.

Surfermum · 25/03/2006 21:40

Dorset is lovely. We have great beaches.

MrsSpoon · 25/03/2006 21:55

Many areas of Scotland are still reasonably well priced.

'Many areas of Scotland are still reasonably well priced.'

but offer limited opportunities for employment or commutes, which add to your cost of living.

Rhubarb · 25/03/2006 22:01

You forgot to say that it's also full of Scottish people! Wink

Best place to live w/kids?

Um, south of France?

Actually, Rhubab, I think you'll find a large concentration of English people in many areas of Scotland.

MrsSpoon · 25/03/2006 22:03

There are no' too bad areas just over the bridge from you expat! GrinWink

Oi! Rhuby what's wrong with Scottish people then???

nannyme · 25/03/2006 22:04

Lake District. Amblesdide or Grasmere.

Lots of Government rural initiatives going on including a Children's Centre pilot. Excelelnt schools with approx 40 pupils at Grasmere.

Very friendly community - always soemone to say hello to in the village.

Rental cheap, to but a little bit cheaper than South East. Employment not fab but not dire, depends what area. Obviously loads of tourist related jobs.

Scenery fantastic and safety? We didn't lock our doors apart from if we went away for more than a night.

Australia-without a doubt!

threebob · 25/03/2006 23:40

New Zealand, though house prices in some areas are getting very silly, I suspect that when compared to some areas of the UK it's okay.

Norfolk's good. Lots of lovely coastal places to live in/visit. Norwich is the county town and offers most things you'd expect of a small city. There's an airport which offers cheap flights to lots of places, good schools, countryside, low crime rates. Have you checked out www.upyourstreet.co.uk? It lists all sorts of details about any area.

notasheep · 26/03/2006 22:11

Detta-its too flat for me(nearly as flat as my chest)

CountessDracula · 27/03/2006 11:04

If nz is so great why are they all over here?

Always wondered that. Plus is SO isolated, I couldn't handle that.
