Children's Bedrooms AIBU thinking Peppa Pig on the walls is naff?

Hi, I want to collect opinions on kids bedroom designs. Personally I hate character themes, I think kids get enough media saturation in the day time, they don't need to have their bedrooms plastered with tv characters too. I have a 2yo DD and I'm starting a design company, so for my first project I want to design a range for children's bedroom (wallpaper, bedding, lampshades etc.) that are themed on something more wholesome - nature. I know my DD would absolutely love to have her walls covered with birds, butterflies, bugs, flowers and leaves but is that just my influence? Would your children like it? I want to be sure that this is something that other people would choose over Peppa Pig or Thomas the Tank. Any opinions?

It's better than the Thomas/bob/buzz/kitty stuff that's available

But there are still butterfly/nature themes available out there. So maybe something a not more original? And there is far too much 'girl' stuff available too

BurnThisDiscoDown · 01/10/2012 13:16

Yy to more boys stuff - there's nowhere near as much choice for boys' bedrooms and it's not usually as nice as the girls' stuff.

xmaximumx · 01/10/2012 13:39

Yeah I really don't want to just be producing more generic stuff. The elements I'm thinking of using in the boys designs are spiders and webs, dragonflies, snails, frogs, birds, mushrooms, worms, leaves, bees. Nothing too gender stereotypical but a general lack of pink fluffiness. Any other suggestions?

What about circus, zoo, parade of animals themes? Noah's Ark? Both genders like animals. I love the Eric Carle animals.

Napdamnyou · 01/10/2012 13:42

Or boats and sea creatures?

Napdamnyou · 01/10/2012 13:43

Or space and stars and the cosmos?

Napdamnyou · 01/10/2012 13:43

Or dinosaurs? Jungles?
Pirates?

My ds wants a space bedroom when I re do it this year, seen a gorgeous space ship bed I want to get him but it is £650!!!

Whitecherry · 01/10/2012 13:44

I was going to also suggest planets/stars/moon

Also patterns

And colour. How about more orange, lime, yellow, teal?

ilovetermtime · 01/10/2012 13:45

Boys like butterflies too...

Or at least mine do!

Whitecherry · 01/10/2012 13:45

and a special mumsnet range of pombears!!

Just for us

noblegiraffe · 01/10/2012 13:48

My 3 year old DS would love either a sea theme (beach or underwater, coral reef or whales and sharks) or jungle/safari. Not sure about spiders and snails tbh, my thought would be that they would make the room look a bit grubby.

xmaximumx · 01/10/2012 13:52

I am definitely looking to do space, underwater, jungles, dinosaurs and pirates as separate ranges. But this first range is going to be specifically garden or woodland wildlife. I like the colour palette suggestions :) Keep the suggestions coming!

Nothing intrinsically wrong with Peppa but I wouldn't use a character theme either. I like bright colours on plain simple backgrounds for my kids rooms rather than muted tones. No beige, no pastels. Decent size wall stickers to match the lampshades and curtains make it much easier to change it all as they grow.

My son would like dogs and cats and ducks and snakes if we are talking animals.

xmaximumx · 01/10/2012 13:56

I did consider that bugs may be off putting as decor, but my artistic style is along the same lines as Eric Carle so in the same way he manages to make a caterpillar look appealing to children I intend to do the same with my bugs.

I love the ikea animals and colour schemes for kids

Owls, foxes, badgers, squirrels. Trees? Bark patterns? Leaf patterns. Twig patterns?

Beanbags in shape of logs or toadstools

You could add a few fairies in too!

xmaximumx · 01/10/2012 13:59

I think snakes would fit into the range quite well thanks :)

I like Ikea colours for kids too. All I could ever find for boys were blue and red things. I wanted bright primary colours. The best bedding ds has is a set from Ikea with a white background and multi-coloured small monsters on. He has another similar one with multi-coloured numbers on.

Not sure how much either of them would have liked too much nature - depends on how you do it. The colours and simple shapes were always what mine liked.

Never had any character stuff.

xmaximumx · 01/10/2012 14:04

I really like the ikea range, owls and squirrels were on my list but perhaps i'll add badgers and foxes too, maybe even deer do you think children would prefer those bigger animals to insects?

I am decorating my DD 2.2yo small bedroom at the moment. I have a burning need for it to reflect her love of the outdoors. I cannot find the items I want

I'd like

  • a tree mural to cider one walk with a washing line extending away from it that has photograph frames on so I can put up her friends and family.
  • Subtle leaf curtains in cream with sage green leaves that look like they are falling.
  • a bedspread which I can pit over her duvet to save me having to buy matching ones
  • a lampshade with hanging leaves
  • a subtle nightlight in the shape of a tree

All soft, not at all pink or prissy but calming Zen space for a child.

I saw a beautiful branch with birds sewn onto it on pinterest but think it's beyond my skills. Oh and a selection of paints from dulux (affordable!) which would work

If you'd like me to beta test anything I would be much more than happy too!

EyesDoMoreThanSee · 01/10/2012 14:05

Cover. Not cider.

Obviously

xmaximumx · 01/10/2012 14:17

Thanks EyesDoMoreThanSee I may well take you up on the offer of Beta testing when I get to that stage. I like your suggestions too, thanks.

Where are you based?

Startailoforangeandgold · 01/10/2012 18:48

Purple, turquoise, yellow, red and green.

Anything that isn't pink or mid royal blue.
Death to foot balls and DD2 says and fairies, I like faries.

DD2 started saying at about 9 I'm fed up of pink I want purple. DD1 grew out of a jungle theme, but had on blue things so moved towards duck egg and soft blue.

tacal · 01/10/2012 19:02

another vote for planets, stars and moon.
