HOW TO DECORATE A 6Y/O BOYS ROOM

Ds's room is looking really shabby and hasn't been decorated for 3 years.Really want to give it a face lift and am looking for ideas. At the moment, it's very bright yellow, with red paintwork and primary coloured animals on the walls.
Would like to have bright colours again, nothing too themed as would like it to last.
Any ideas anyone?

Have you tired your local library? Tons of books on decorating children's rooms will give you some ideas. Or does your ds have an idea of what he might like?

6yr old boy = blue blue and more blue room IMO

ds has a different idea/colour/cartoon character theme in mind every day!!!
have some ideas myself ,just wondered if any creatively minded mumsnetters had any good ideas!

I did DS1s room in a gorgeous deep blue from the Crayola raonge. Painted over it on the chimney breast with a glitter glaze, mixed it with white to paint 2 walls a lilac shade (looks boyish with the blue, honest!). Silver accessories, metallic painted shelves and desk gave a kind of loose "space" theme without it being themed IYSWIM.

Would definitely avoid a truly themed room because he'll grow out of it in about 6 months!

Sound simiar to ds3 room that we left behind at the old house soupy.

dark navy/indigo about the picture rail, blau blue below it, silver lamp shade etc tec.

Looked Fab!

Our new house has an abundance of cream...dull dull dull.

alexsmum · 08/03/2006 10:44

that sounds lovely soupy! that's the kind of ideas i was hoping for!
I was thinking of an orange-tangerine colour.something warm.
He needs a new carpet too.was thinking of a neutral colour but that is probably asking for trouble.

Think about laminate and a rug for the floor. Laminate is better for playing on, cars go bette on it and it's wipe clean! :o

I am on the verge of doing DS2's room (have been on the verge since November) - he is 12 and has had car wallpaper (which did come off in November)and red woodwork since he was about 4!

He is having mid-blue walls with silver woodwork, maple laminate floor and birch \link{http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IkeamsSearch?storeId=7&langId=-20&catalogId=null&searchType=product&pageNumber=-1&orderBy=score&query=malm&category=%23%7EProducts\Malm} furniture (hope maple and birch look OK together!)

You could stick/stencil some pictures on top of any colour and then paint over them later when you or he wants to change it?

JanH · 08/03/2006 11:20

Or do one wall in a patterned paper and then change that later.

alexsmum · 08/03/2006 17:38

really like soupy's idea of doing one wall blue with glittery stuff on top. He's quite into space/star wars etc so would be appropriate.
I want him to have carpet for the warmth factor. We have laminate downstairs and while it's very practical it's not very cosy.
Have seen some good space themed stick ons which i liked the look of.mmmm lots to think about!

alexsmum, i think a dull beige/cooffee colour with orange and navy blue would be my colour scheme, dark dark navy curtains and a fun outer space bedlinen set , we got a rocket lamp form john lewis and rug,
beige floor carpet
walls more beige/orange than navy/blue, use the blue/navy to accent rather than on the walls - i think navy on walls is cold i know its not sky blue but beige orange are warmer.

i have some links and if i can get round to it will post.

heavenis · 08/03/2006 17:42

My ds1 room has blue wall paper which has stars on it that glow in the dark. It looks really good. He's got buzz light year curtains and light shade etc.

hermykne · 08/03/2006 17:42

soupys idea is lovely as a wall scene, would look brilliant plus if he grows out of it , its not difficvult to change

alexsmum · 08/03/2006 18:00

like your ideas hermykne-maybe one wall blue with the glitter on, the rest of room orange, paintwork navy blue...sounds nice.
