at long last i am able to do something about my grotty living room.
i have for a while had a vague idea that i want shades of brown/beige/cream that sort of thing.

trouble is i just can't seem to make it all come together as i am having walls, flooring and new suite and don't know what colour to use where.

the floor will be laminate and i was consiering plain walls all round except for a patterned paper on the chimney breast and alcoves( or is this a no-no?)

I do want it to look modern, but, it's an old terraced house so maybe ULTRA modern would look silly???

help puuurleeese

Hmm sorry don't do cream so can't help

Cream makes me depressed

Also I really don't like laminate flooring in old houses - is it victorian? Could you strip the floorboards instead?

(sorry that was a bit harsh sounding, not being very helpful am I, just ignore me) Grin

We have done ours a kind of Baileys colour with laminate floors, a deep terracotta suite and a large Kelim rug incorporating the colour scheme. Not very keen on patterned paper tbh, but if you want something different on that wall choose a different/complementary colour of paint.

is that wallpaper that you paint over old fashioned? thought it might be good for hiding any lumps and bumps

WE're just putting our living room together as we're moving soon and want it to look right! We have a beige crapet and dark brown leather suite. We have a wooden dado rail roudn the room with light choc on the bottom and pale beige on the top half (on the Dulux website- 2 shades of cappuccino candy I think). Curtains are beigey sort of colour. THis week I have made new cushions, added a band of colour to the bottom of the curtains and made a runner for the dining table all in the same fabric- a deep reddy green colour (sounds yucky but is actually really nice- it's a deep green with red embroidered flowers all over it)When we move we are either going to paint or wallpaper the chimney breast in a colour to match the fabric. MIght sound OTT but it works!

Think you can buy the wallpaper that you paint over in sismple designs like checks or lines. We've never tried it as have replastered where we have lumps and bumps but in laws use it and it looks lovely

I have a light coffee coloured paint on the lower part of my wall, a white dado, then a lighter shade of coffee at the top, and a border on top of the dado, with squares of different coloured browns beech flooring, a blue sofa (getting a brown leather one delivered soon)
I could take a pic for you later if you like.
