Anyone had a lodger in their house?

We have a spare room and DP wants us to take in a lodger for the extra income. He is also thinking the lodger could do some babysitting of DD (aged 4), and possibly some housework, for a reduced rent.
I am nervous about how this would work in practice, and also not sure about the practicalities of sharing our house with a stranger. Don't want to go back to student days of having to write our names on bottles of milk, etc!
Also worried about how to ensure DD's safety and security, ie. undesirable things being left around, strange friends of lodger coming round. Can anyone help?

snowbell, i would only have a lodger if 1.i knew them very well, and 2. if i didnt have any children.

i just wouldnt take the risk with a stranger with my child in my house, i would feel awful if i found out something had happened
