No idea just sending you my commiserations. My DSIS assures me Aber isnt quite the dump it was when we were kids, but I still wouldn't want to be stuck there unless its a really nice day.

I went to university in Aberystwyth, but it was a long time ago now! Our favourite pub was the Cambrian (opposite the train station). I imagine that the town is pretty dead with all the students gone? We used to enjoy walking along the sea front (not the prom but over by the marina. You might need a dog for that to be enjoyable though!

edam · 30/06/2012 18:48

Am in grim pub with sticky floor and bored.barman reading a book. Colleague tells me her wine is 'adequate which is the best I can hope for round here' :-)

Do you have a car? If so I recommend the drive to The Harbourmasters (sp?) at Aberaeron.

peggyblackett · 30/06/2012 18:53

The Harbour Master Hotel. Fabulous food.

teaandthorazine · 30/06/2012 18:56

Well, Aber is bursting with pubs - it depends what you want! When I was a student there I used to love Rummers wine bar on the Trefechan bridge - lovely cave-like atmophere, candles, etc. Gannets used to be the place to eat if you wanted something posh Grin.

(The Cambrian is great if you want scary cocktails in pint glasses - ahhhhh, memories!)

teaandthorazine · 30/06/2012 18:56

Edam which pub are you in?

brabbinsandfyffe · 30/06/2012 18:58

I was in Machynlleth last year (at a completely gorgeous and fantastic guesthouse, if you want to escape yours) and the landlady drove her friend to Aber at sunset to see the starlings, which apparently gather in massive clouds. Not sure that's all year round though.....might be an alternative to feeble wine....:)

nooka · 30/06/2012 19:00

teaandthorazine when were you at Aber? Your summary sounds just the way I remember it (dh and I were there from 1990-93). dh was partial to an orbital or two, although he liked the Cambrian best for their very good Bass (and the lock ins).

teaandthorazine · 30/06/2012 19:03

Yep, I was there from 92-95. Loved it - I mean, obviously it was (probably still is) deeply uncool but SO much fun! God, I remember Orbitals... have just been googling pubs and restaurants for edam and it's bringing back a LOT of memories Grin

teaandthorazine · 30/06/2012 19:13

ohhhh, to be a broke student again

edam · 30/06/2012 20:24

memories! I was at aber 93-96!

edam · 01/07/2012 15:35

well, that was horrid. Grim grim grim grim grim. Aberystwyth - so bad it's not twinned with anywhere but does have a suicide pact with Dartford. (with apols to the late, great, Linda Smith.)

To cap it all, escaped on a train this morning, only for the guard to announce AFTER we'd set off that there was no trolley service. Not a drop of liquid for FOUR HOURS. My colleague and I shared out carefully rationed doses of Bach Rescue Remedy mouth spray like survivors of a shipwreck waiting for rescue...

Receptionist in the hotel this morning said 'Oh, I suppose you'll be going somewhere nice today. Like Birmingham... ' THAT'S how shit Aberystwyth is, makes Brum look like a paradise people can only dream of.

You have my sympathy edam. I went to university there and lasted a year - I loathe it :o

EdithWeston · 01/07/2012 15:45

The books by Malcolm Pryce might help you get through it! They are:

Aberystwyth Mon Amour
Last Tango in Aberystwyth
The Unbearable Lightness of Being in Aberystwyth
Don't Cry for Me Aberystwyth
From Aberystwyth with Love
The Day Aberystwyth Stood Still

Sposh · 01/07/2012 15:49

My college roommate was from Aber so i went there with her a couple of times.

Things that struck me were that there was a single rail line in and out so trains were few and far between as they couldn't pass each other.

There was no alcohol served ANYWHERE on a Sunday, except at private clubs. Is that still true?

lagartija · 01/07/2012 16:26

Ha ha that's so funny, I went to school in Dartford and uni at Aber Grin

nooka · 01/07/2012 16:31

I'm pretty sure we got pissed on Sundays (along with the rest of the week!). As a student I really enjoyed living in Aber, as the remoteness meant that there was a very good social life - no one left very often and you could visit all your friends with a max half hour walk. It wasn't so good when you fell out with your mates mind!

edam · 01/07/2012 16:40

edith Grin

my colleague and I were making up slogans for sticks of rock 'Aberystwyth - be very glad you aren't here' was the cleanest.

We found the most startling window display on the high street. Very old fashioned and bleached out - you know shop windows in places that have stood still since the 1950s look really faded? Did a double take, saw it was a nurse and a body on a table wrapped in bandages, looked more carefully and realised it was a ruddy sex shop!

If you ever find yourself stuck in Aber again Bella Vita, Gwesty Cymru and Ultracomida are nice.

Unusual for there to be no trolley service on the train, I travelled from Aber to Birmingham on Friday and back yesterday and the trolley was back and forth for the whole three hours. And every time it passed the children pestered me for something!

NormanTheForeman · 01/07/2012 16:58

Wish I'd seen this yesterday - I could have sent you round to visit my sister who live is Aberystwyth!

There is a nice Greek restaurant there, and a Japanese one.

And yes, it's unusual for there to be no trolley service on the train. Which reminds me, must book our train tickets for later in the month!

Sposh · 01/07/2012 16:59

Maybe the University bars are considered private? Mind you, I was there in '88-'89 so entirely likely that the laws have changed since then!
