How about some voluntary work? (unless you need the money as well as something to fill time). Charity shops are often short of staff or try the Friends of... your local hospital or something.

my special needs school has volunteers who come into hear the kids reading.

Do you have any qualifications or experience to help you in your job search? What did you do before kids?
