We are just beginning house-buying process and were wondering if anyone had any thoughts regarding solicitors for conveyancing purposes...

totally necessary?

yes imo, have always used one.

From what I've gleaned from here our EA's associated conveyancer could well be more expensive than a solicitor and I don't think I'd trust them to be unbiassed. You do need someone to handle the coordination of mortgage funds, land regisrty, searches etc unless you are confident enough to do it yourself , of course.
