Has anyone who was in care as a child had access to their care file?

I've only just discovered there is such a thing and I'm currently enquiring about getting access to mine. Just wondering if anyone else has done this and what sort of information it contained?

Don't know but would be very interested to see if you can get access to social services files from years ago? Dh is in mid 40's and had a big file, wonder if he could get access to that now? (talking 30 odd years ago)

HellyBelly, I expect the files have to be kept for a loooong time! I'm sure there is probably a set number of years. Not sure what that number is myself, but someone else here must know?

My sister got a copy of her files from the Social Work Dept about 1yr ago, we were all in fostercare in Scotland, I just feel I have moved on and don't want to see some information, but for some people like my sister it helped her move on because she was the youngest and did not remeber lots of things. schnapps I would contact the Social Work dept that dealt with you and your fmily at the time you were in care. I've sent off the form asking to see my file, so just got to wait and see what happens now.
