Car Insurance - What a nightmare!!!!

I have spent most of the morning trawling loads of different websites for cheaper car insurance - the differences are vast, I have been quoted between £500.00 and £1200.00.
Can anyone save me this hassle and reccommend an insurer that is reasonable in cost(I have to confess to being a bit of a tight wadd!!!)

Incidentally do any of you shop around like this for house insurance? We've been with the building soc all along and I'm sure we could save quite a bit if I looked - I think because it just appears on the annual mortgage statement I never think about how much it is (don't even know how much it is TBH!)

soupdragon, my mum went with Admiral a few years ago because theirs was the cheapest, but then came horribly unstuck when she had an accident. I can't remember what happened but I know she ended up having to complain because of the way they dealt with her claim & she changed back to another company after that. (I think they weren't going to refund her £250 excess even though she'd been hit up the back & it wasn't her fault).

I tried lots of companies at last renewal but ended up staying with Churchill for about the 10th year in a row. All these places advertising cheaper insurance for women are only cheaper if you pay upfront in one lump sum. Once you want to pay by instalments forget it.
