...trying to get an indication of a price for how much it would be to move furniture...not a huge amount to Italy, near Naples.

Have asked 6 International removers for a quote, but a week later no response.

Many thanks

I have just moved from Venice, Italy (to Brazil). I had problems getting a decent quote but ended up using a company which are very big in Italy (Bolliger, HQ in Milan) and affliated to Allied in the UK. Ring for a quotation rather than email, it was the only way I could get an answer, it also give you an idea if they really know what they are doing

Albert · 31/01/2006 19:39

Sorry, just realised that they weren't affliated to Allied (that co. couldn't do Brazil) but can advise that cost was 300Euro per cbm, but bear in mind that was from waterbound Venice across Atlantic to Brazil so your price should be considerably less. I think MaryPop lives in Italy and has recently moved, she might be able to help.

We moved from UK to Switzerland almost 5 years ago and back last summer. First time with Allied Pickfords and second time with Sterling International Relocations - neither were impressive tbh. Make sure they visit (so they can assess amoutn of time for wrapping, any dismantling, volume of container required etc) and so you tell them exactly what you need going where. If it isn't a lot you may be able to have a split truck with another delivery in the same general direction (our Zurich delivery was going on to Naples).

Ask purpleturtle - she had her house packed up, with a view to having it all shipped to Oz, didn't in the end but still got the quotes ect

DaddyCool · 31/01/2006 19:59

god knows. I had a 20ft container quote for shipping to Canada. Came out at £2,500 so Italy has got to be cheaper.

A 20ft container should hold the contents of most medium size houses.

i found sterling to be very good, mind you we didn't have to pay, lol

We moved three weeks ago to Switzerland, and shipped all the furniture from our two bed flat in Scotland. We went with the Luker Brothers who we werent that impressed with (packing etc). We paid around £3000 (DH's firm paid the majority thank god), but we were so bamboozled by swiss import regs, esp with regards to our car that we went with the company who appeared most knowledgable. The cost also included three weeks of storage whilst we moved out. Quotes varied from £2000 to £5000, but we have an awful lot of big pieces of furniture and about 2000 books (heavy hardback most of them!) that needed shifting. Hope that helps, best of luck with the move.

welcome to switzerland - where are you?

LIZS · 01/02/2006 10:34

We didn't pay either and I'm sure charged the company the earth , but they were still cr*p (like not knowing that the packers wouldn't arrive at 9am as scheduled because their flight didn't arrive until after then and then being further delayed by getting lost because they didn't have our full address and directions or satnav on the truck) and the guys had a pretty bad attitude by the end of the job. Friends of ours used another international company, and one of their packers even put a plate of cat food in with sofa cushions which, by the time they were unpacked a week or so later, reeked and had maggots - bleugh ! Hope yours runs smoothly and perhaps if possible get a recommendation not only of a company but specific people within it if you also need packers.

MummyinCH · 01/02/2006 11:28

Hi ernest (changed my name-am historywitch)-thanks for the welcome, guessing you are in Switzerland too-where are you?
We are living in Fribourg, DH got a job at the university here at very short notice (two months!) so here we are!

ernest · 01/02/2006 11:54

Yes, we're near Zurich. Not very near. Hope you settle in quick. feel free to cat me if you need any help/have any q's etc

MummyinCH · 01/02/2006 12:00

That would be very useful, may take you up on that, thank you.

sonya291275 · 01/02/2006 13:59

we moved from uk to nz and back again with pickfords they were professional and very helpful

melissasmummy · 01/02/2006 15:07

Anyone recommend for Australia??

SauerKraut · 01/02/2006 15:19

We paid £4000 to Switzerland, near Zurich, also with Luker Brothers, who were crap, from NI. Ernest, whereabouts are you? We are near Baden, Aargau.

ernest · 01/02/2006 16:28

Other side - Schaffhausen - cut I think only about 20 - 30 mins from Baden. How long you been here Sauerkraut?

SauerKraut · 02/02/2006 07:28

coming up for 5 years this April. And you? How have your kids settled? If you have kids...! Do you like it here? Sorry about thread hijack

bobbybobbobbingalong · 02/02/2006 07:40

Make sure if you have insurance you have insurance. We paid for insurance, but it turned out we didn't have it with who we thought we had it with and had it with another company who were not registered with ombudsman. Must be illegal to use another companies stationary and then say - but actually you were with these people.

Eventually got damaged made good plus insurance premium refunded.

Also get in writing what they mean by "single event".

ernest · 02/02/2006 10:34

6 years in October, 3 kids, v. settled, love it. You? Also sorry for interruption.

SauerKraut · 02/02/2006 18:23

4 kids, settled too, got used to it! Went for a lovely day trip in Schaffhausen recently- must be nice place to live.

ernest · 02/02/2006 19:32

is Baden the town with the impossible-to-find Kindermuseum with loads of contradictors sign posts sending you round in circles up and down escalotors in the railway station? If so been there once & to the McDonalds. Great museum. Eventually. Sorry, I forgot 'near' in my post, we're near Schaffhausen, welll about 15 mins away, near Bulach - have you heard of that? About 15 minutes from Zurich airport, but not under flight path

Back to thread - will you be paying yourselves, Eve?

When we did the international move, with Stirling, they were great & even organised an electrician to come & change all of our plugs. At first I thought it was a stupid idea, I mean. I'm more than capable, but then I had to get out all my plug in gadgets.... my God, the poor man was there most of the day. Never knew I had so many. Poor sod must've been bored rigid.

If you are paying yourselves it'd be worth mentioning, because they will almost certainly lower the quote. They will assume your compnay is paying & bump up the price accordingly, or looking at it another way, find ways to reduce costs for you if you are funding the move yourself.
