You can put your own CD's into MP3 format and download them onto player, did it come with a disk or a website to download a programme?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 25/01/2006 23:41

Its got a little disk thinky but i put it in the wotsit and nothing happened. I looked on some MP3 sites and they want credit card details!!

www.mp3search.ru is legal and cheap. I haven't used it but it was recommended to me by someone who uses it.

LeftOverTurkey · 25/01/2006 23:50

There are free ones but it is debatable whether they are legal. Actually they are probably not.

kazaa, winmx or bittornado

You need to try and run that disk that is what will let you transfer stuff onto the player. Some do let you drag and drop but most you need to use their driver. DP buys a few songs fron i-tunes. I have just transfered some of my CD's.

Thanks

I will try and have a go tomorrow - this new fangled technology scrammbles my mind! Mumsnetting I can cope with but anything more complicated and im lost

My DD's new MP3 player had both DH and BIL flumoxed for about 3 hrs and both are pretty good at techno things, it was me that realised with this player you can drag and drop but you still have to convert to MP3 format. You can save them in that format either realplayer or whatever it is I have got.

That disk should have the software to do it.

kazaa, bittornado and mp3search.ru are illegal sites, the record labels are going after people who download with lawsuits, in the UK several people have had to pay £000's for copyright infringements.

iTunes is good for buying dowloads, very simple to use but not the cheapest one. I think hmv.co.uk was selling them at a lower price at least when they launched? good luck!

Filyjonk · 26/01/2006 08:08

None of these are legal. There is no way to get free music, unless the copyright holder is giving you permission.

Its also illegal to copy from cd . It really is. Dh is an expert on this. Sorry!

Having said that there is some cool music which is explicitly free to download. Basically by unsigned bands with their own websites.

Or go to Napster + pay per download.

Or take the risk. Don't think you're likely to get caught just copying from cd to an mp3, but prob dep on which system you've got on computer? (some have spyware installed) I know loads of people do it but it is technically illegal, just so you know.

LeftOverTurkey · 26/01/2006 09:40

mp3search.ru isn't illegal is it? You are paying but remakably little for each track.
Also bittornado isn't illegal per se I didn't think - it is used for exchanging legit software files not just music. However I suppose that is irrelevant here as we are talking music.

I thought transferring cds onto pc and then ipod was fine as its only for private use. Its the file sharing thats illegal surely?

Kelly1978 · 26/01/2006 09:49

i think copying cds for personal use is legal - same as copying dvds for personal use is legal. You are allowed to make back up copies, as long as you retain possession of the original and so the copyright. Somebody on here recomended allofmp3.com which is really cheap. It's russian based or soemthign, legal and only costs about $1.50 for an album. I've paid them about £20 and got about 11 albums and still got credit left. You have to top up and then you can download. It's mroe fiddly to use than itunes, but there is supposed to be a good getting started section on there.

It is legal to put your own CD's onto your own MP3 player.
