I RRRREALLLLY don't think that the legal age to have sex made the slightest bit of difference to a girl deciding to have sex!! I know I didn't care. I felt ready so I did it! I was 15.

Some of my friends were 13 or 14.... again the matter of the law ws irrelevant to us. It's a huge life decision to lose your virginity and I really object to some middleaged men in parliament deciding when is right for us! It's a personal choice.

I think it's a bit strange to say that lowering the age of consent will make girls run out and have sex younger! Like I said, what 13,14 or 15 yr old girl do YOU know who would say to there boyfriend "I really want to have sex with you, but we best not coz its illegal". I mean seriously!

Batters I have to agree. I am 26 and I would feel sick at the thought of a relationship with a 15 year old!!! It really isnt right - that is why the age of consent should stay where it is imo.

When I was 15 I had 10 month relationship with a 25 year old man. I told my parents he was 22, but they still went crazy. My Dad was the worst and tried everything to stop me from seeing him, so I became really devious as I genuinley thought I loved this guy. He was good looking, had a car and took me to the pub. I was so cool as far as my friends were concerned. I look back now and realised what I put my parents through, though I could see no wrong in the situation back then. (neither could he more to the point)

My dd is 16 and she thinks very few of her peers have had sex, thus far, so the idea that 14/15 year olds are all busy bonking illegally seems far from the norm here.

M2T, I don't think the law is a barrier to those who wish to start young, but it does provide legal protection for girls who may be coming under pressure but want to say no.

After all, take drink driving laws - it's much more acceptable to stick to soft drinks nowadays than it was 20 years ago. Everyone understands the rules and that's because it is illegal to drink and drive.

I think 16 is the correct age of consent. Before that age, children are unable to deal with the possible consequences of sex. I watched a programme last week about teenage mums (I think it was just shown in Scotland). One teenager said her mum was not too happy when she told her she was pg - partly because her 14 yo sister was also pg. I don't think that is the best start in life, for the girls themslves, their children or their poor mother.

A woman in America faces between 8 and 15 years in prison for having sex with a 16 year old youth (details here ).
Many states in USA have an age limit of 21 for alcohol consumption.
