When you hold your nose and blow to pop your ears, does air actually come out of them???

pmsl

btw - I have no idea, though I doubt it.

FrannytheQuinoaEater · 20/01/2006 19:18

Try it in water, then you would see.

My guess is no.

FrannytheQuinoaEater · 20/01/2006 19:19

However I swear when I was little and my mum was smoking while driving (I know, shock horror) she forgot to exhale and smoke came out of her ears. Everyone tells me it can't have been, but I saw it

waterfalls · 20/01/2006 19:19

I want you all to do it now, it really feels like air is coming out

No, it jsut made me feel dizzy.

however, if i blow my nose hard, my right eye's tear duct bubbles....

WigWamBam · 20/01/2006 19:21

But if air came out your ears wouldn't go pop ... they'd go whoooooooosh instead ...

chicagomum · 20/01/2006 19:21

OK. How about this one.... If you sneeze with your eyes open, is it true it creates enough force for your eye balls to pop out?

waterfalls · 20/01/2006 19:22

They go pop first if there is a wax build up, then they do go whoooooooosh.

jalopy · 20/01/2006 19:23

Nah, I think the pressure in the ears is altered. You could always place deflated balloons on either ear and watch the result

waterfalls · 20/01/2006 19:24

lol

Lacrimosa · 20/01/2006 19:25

It is the increase in pressure when your ear drum is 'squashed' and then released the space for air changes in your ear and only air that was in your ear is displaced, so air does come out but not the same air you hold in...... is there a pub quiz anywhere I think they might be missing a member!

waterfalls · 20/01/2006 19:26

Lacrimosa

So I was right.

OP posts:
hotmama · 20/01/2006 19:28

My grandad used to 'blow' cigarette smoke out of his ears!

Lacrimosa · 20/01/2006 19:35

if your tubes for ear nose and throaght are perforated enough it would be possible but only if they are very perforated
