basically, do u use baby signs and what do u use and would recommend? i can't go to classes as i also have a toddler. Hve looked at tinytalk and sing and sign but there are no classes within walking distance (i don't drive) so i want something i can read from a book or find on teh internet. BSL looks too hard for a baby i already looked

how old is your baba? as a average age is 10 mths but the earlier you start the better...

best to get a video as thats what i prefer than a book and the video, your baba can join in too.. mine loves her

I use makaton - use little books - think book 1 and 2 cost 15 pounds all together. I use makaton with dd1 who has down syndrome and dd2 is picking it up as we go along. Dd2 knows - more, eat, drink, flower, gone, baby.

UK Makaton is based on BSL but not as intense in its usage and a lot of it is natural signing eg. Drink is to imagine you are holding a cup and bring it up to your lips.

I'd second the sing and sign DVD - you can probably pick most of it up from there alone. The classes just help reinforce it. I think you can buy the DVD on the sing and sign website.

There are no classes near us either. We have been using them with DD though and she is doind really well wit them, she uses a combination of words and signs and can communicate a lot to us which definately cuts down on the number of tantrums!

We just taught her ourselves. We bought a kit off ebay and after some research got the sign2me stuff, as it uses proper sign language signs so it is of some use possibly in the furture too. The pack we got was by Dr Joseph Garcia. I piked it up for a couple of quid off ebay it included a video, book and quick guide card.

I'd higly recommend doing it. its harder without a class but still possible and very worth it!
