.......despite their best efforts to look pleased - obviously HATE what you've given them??

It was our work Christmas "do" (takeaway paid for by the owner of the home) last night, and the secret santa presents were given out. We were told £5 - but some had obviously spent quite a bit more than that. Anyhow, I'd spent my £5 - and I thought had done a reasonable job (given that I've only been there for 1 month, 3 nights a week, and the person I had to buy for only works days - so I only really see her for about 45 minutes a week (if that). She opened it and her face just dropped and she said a not very "thankyou Secret Santa" - and covered the present with the paper - while everyone else had theirs out on full view.

I feel really awful - do you think I should just forget it - or should I buy a bottle of wine (watching her last night he obviously likes the stuff) and leave it for her at work???

almostachristmasangel · 22/12/2005 07:59

PruniStuffing · 22/12/2005 08:01

Forget it.

But tell us what you bought!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 22/12/2005 08:01

no lol - I bought this (but it was £5 in the shop I promise LOL).

It's just she's really lovely - and the two "days" I did when I first started I shadowed her - everyone else so obviously loved their presents (I got a gorgeous photo album) and she obviously hated hers.

WHAT DID YOU BUY?

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 22/12/2005 08:02

She tried so hard not to look disappointed - and I don't think anyone else picked up on it - but because I was watching her more closely) given that it was my gift) I noticed she wasn't very impressed.

She may not be a candle person, why not get her the bottle of wine as thank you for letting me shadow you.

almostachristmasangel · 22/12/2005 08:03

well id like them!

PruniStuffing · 22/12/2005 08:04

Lovely.

Possibly she'd just been out and bought them as a gift for someone else at £2.50?

Or, maybe like me she's got a cupboard full of candle-holders?

I still think it's gracious to look pleased, though. Or at least, not unhappy.

Will she work out who it was who gave her the gift? If not, relax...

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 22/12/2005 08:06

If she'd just been out and bought them for £2.50 she did bl**dy well - I only bought them at 4.55 this afternoon!!!

Like I said she did try to look pleased - but I guess if it's something you really hate (and you've had a few drinks as she had) it's more difficult.

Yes - she'll probably figure it out if she tries - most people had already worked out who their secret santa was by the time they all left at 10pm last night.......

You bought her a perfectly nice present and she is just being ungrateful. What did she expect?! The most important thing is that you don't spend too much time worrying about what she thinks. You haven't done anything wrong you know.

PruniStuffing · 22/12/2005 08:11

I always feel bad about this sort of thing, but look, you got her a lovely present - what happens in her head about it, you have no control over.

PantomimEDAMe · 22/12/2005 08:11

Oh FGS Secret Santa presents aren't always the thing you'd like best in the world! They are a bit of fun. From colleagues who may not know you that well or feel inclined to spend hours searching for the ideal present. It's not like her dh gave her an apron!
Ignore her, ungrateful mare.

ElfBert · 22/12/2005 08:11

Oh for crying out loud - it's a BIT OF FUN!

WHAT did she THINK she'd get? A spa day?

EatDrinkAndBeAMerryPip · 22/12/2005 08:15

It's not the end of the world, don't worry about it. Who expects the present of their dreams in a Secret Santa present? I've had some crap ones before but I never took it seriously, it's just a laugh. Don't you dare buy her a bottle of wine. If the candle-holders aren't her style then that's her problem, not yours.

BTW, what did you get?
