We are at last hopefully in a position to buy a new property out of London and in preferably the Petersfield area - that is if anyone eventually puts their house on the market - we haven't seen many and none we really liked.

I just wondered if anyone knew the area and could provide tips or suggestions re schools and the best/worst areas....

Thanks

Hi Tlb, I know Petersfield and the area very well, but not for schools as we dont live there. If you want to go through Rachel/Carrie for my e-mail address I will glady help.

My Sister in law lives there. It is a lovely town, Petersfield school has a good reputaion. Get in touch with the council, they'll send a school Sats results listing for all the schools in the area. My SIL goes to Portsmouth for 'big' shops.

I dont live there but not far from it and used to work there. Has station etc and they are just building a new Tesco superstore. They have a leisure centre with a nice pool and some nice shops. Lots of countryside which is nice and Queen Elizabeth country park which is great for walks all year round, picnics, barbecues and they have lots of crafty things and Butser hill for sledging. Portsmouth is good for shopping as is Chichester and you have the coast which is probably the best bit as far as we are concerned.

Hi Tlb, you will be moving to a lovely part of South Hampshire. I grew up in a village about 6 miles away from Petersfield.
Petersfield itself is a nice, bustly, provincial market town. It has a fantastic Waitrose and all the shops you need on a daily basis. My own favourite local cities would be Winchester and Chichester, although I probably spent more time in Portsmouth. There are lots of nice villages nearby, Harting, Buriton, Hambledon. Clanfield is OK but a bit soulless. Other nearby towns: Waterlooville is horrible - all carpet & shoe shops. Horndean is better, more of a villagy feel - in fact I'm not sure if it is a village or town.
School reputations may have changed since I was a girl, but there are quite a few good private schools: Ditcham Park & Churchers College immediately spring to mind. Langrish State School also used to have a good reputation but again that could have changed.
Property prices are ridiculously high in the area generally. Chichester is one of the most expensive cities outside of London.
Good luck with your search. Put another post up if you want more info.
