Is this stealing?

DS has lost two school sweatshirts this term. Both were named (sewn in). I have taken the school apart looking for them (they are not cheap) but no luck. However, I did find a large bin liner full of unnamed sweatshirts. They have been there some time.

Is it stealing to take two to replace the ones we have lost?

I'd take them too, but in addition type out a short "where's ds's top/please check your child's uniform" note to be handed round the class. then you'll feel you've done all you can.

This really used to bug me about primary school. Ds3 particularly used to lose his clothes on a regular basis (including school top at ballet class) and I'd rumage through the "lost property" box through all these named items. If something has a name on it isn't lost, surely? Why is it so difficult for whoever has "found" said item to return it to a child in a school of just 6 classes?

I've done it, ds kept losing them so it was swings and roundabouts
I think all of them had his name in by the end though

Defo do it - at least you can at primary school! (Once they're at secondary you've had it - having your mummy turn up to root through Lost Property on your behalf would be social death )

ugh the lost property at ds's secondary school smells like a cess pit too....

Janh · 18/12/2005 19:26

Piffle! Don't tell me you've done it

yes, 'borrow' unnamed stuff from the lost property box until your stuff turns up (or not). Have done this myself - reassuring to see I am not alone!

Does your school use the lost property stuff for emergencies too? If so, donate some uniform your ds has grown out of. Then you're doing a swap not a steal.

Janh, social suicide indeed for a parent to root through lost property at secondary school. I will file that away in my memory and use it as a threat if ds1 is too careless with his school stuff.
