Is holding a knife and fork properly important to you?

ok there are worse things going on the world but I can't help being irritated this.

Just watched a piece on the news showing children eating and they were actually 'stabbing' at their food! I've seen it on tv quite a lot, with a full fist grabbing the fork handle and stabbing into food and don't get me started on the 'pen' knife hold!

I await the brickbats

Oooh I agree with you, can't bear it when children (or adults!) eat like savages. Also hate hate hate the 'pen' knife hold!

SilentBite · 13/12/2005 13:19

Yes I can't bear the pen thing either it drives me crazy

TheFish · 13/12/2005 13:20

SilentBite · 13/12/2005 13:21

we sat next to a bloke in a restaurant in the city yesterday who ate like a total pig it was really very offputting

frogs · 13/12/2005 13:23

Me too, but am table manners fascist. Really hate that thing where they spike big piece of food on a fork and then take bites off it. And children eating pasta with their fingers, yuk. Or children who lick all the icing off cakes while parents stand by watching indulgently.

Anyone age 4 and up can use a knife and fork competently, you just have to make the effort to teach them.

MerryKidMas · 13/12/2005 13:25

I am still trying to get DS to use a knife and fork. He is quite happy to hold the fork in his hand while he uses his other hand to put the food in his mouth!
It really irritates me but I guess he will get the hang of it eventually, or at least he will get fed up with me nagging him and be forced into it that way!

frogs · 13/12/2005 13:27

Bizarre that out of all our friends, only one set have children who can eat competently. All the others commit sundry knife and fork crimes, or just eat with their fingers. Would also like to outlaw children who say, "I don't like x" as soon as you put a plate in front of them. Just discreetly leave it, fgs, spare us from having to listen to a list of your food fads.

walkinginawinterBundleland · 13/12/2005 13:32

frogs · 13/12/2005 13:34

[scary fascist laugh]

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 13/12/2005 13:38

Oh get a grip (preferably a pen one). Life's too short.

expatinscotland · 13/12/2005 13:40

Yes! I am left-handed. Even though I am American, my father's father was educated in Spain. When he saw I was left-handed, he took it to hand to teach me the 'proper' way to eat.

VERY important to use cutlery well.

MistleToo · 13/12/2005 13:42

too short to be irritated by knife 'pen' holders

bundle - either!

acnebride · 13/12/2005 13:42

important? ooooooohhhhh yes. of course life is too short. of course it doesn't matter. but over my dead body will ds use the pen grip [cracks whip]. i would rather he sold drugs.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 13/12/2005 13:43

pmsl at "Even though I am American"

Glitterygook · 13/12/2005 13:43

oh yes, can't stand it when people can't hold a knife properly.

also, my friend was feeding her 7 month old banana the other day - from a knife!!!! She was putting a bit on the end and 'spooning' in but with the knife!! I was - why can't she just give it her to hold or cut into pieces she can pick up?? Most odd.

walkinginawinterBundleland · 13/12/2005 13:45

I see.

if you never eat with your fingers you miss out on the sensory nature of food, so am not over strict with my girls..also hate it when I see people eating inappropriate food (eg toasted sandwiches) with knife & fork. (though do disapprove of the "pen" hold of knife...eewwww)
