Half the schools in our town are shut

but my kids school is open Apparently there is a cut off point for the town's schools, and half the town is closed lol

and we are 16 miles from the blast, so why are some schools here shut???

As well as geographical cut off decided by the council/police etc, often it is up to the discretion of the head teacher - if they feel there is a definite health and safety issue they can shut the school. Clearly a bit borderline and subjective.

LOL I didn't tell them. I spoke to the school, because I am worried about dd1 being out in the wind, because she was premature and has a weaker chest as a result

i live about 1/2 mile away from 2 schools, both in pretty muich the same direction, one is shut, dd1 school is open.

The school said they would be in contact if herts county change their minds and shut the school

I saw a woman on TV this morning complaining about the schools being shut. She seemed to think that it was more dangerous for the children because they were playing out on the streets! Well FGS, keep them indoors then!!!

I didn't care either way, I know we have a chance of getting the smoke this way, but if the school was closed then fair enough, but its open and I am not going to freak out about it.

Our schools are all shut as well, you can barely see the smoke from here! I was told it was precaution in case there was a fire at a school and all of hertfordhsires firemen are in Hemel so wouldn't be able to get to it. Sounds like a good excuse for a day off for the teachers. It;s ds's last day of nursery tomorrow before he starts reception, if they are still closed he is going to miss the party and won't be able to say good bye to his nursery teachers or give them the book he had specially chosen.

Oh honestly, i can see the smoke from my bedroom window and my kids are still at school as theirs is private and they make their own decisions. Personally I think this is a lot of fuss about not very much!

Sparkly, I'm in Watford, (well I'm at work at the moment so not there now) can see the smoke in the distance but can't smell anything. I had no idea what had happened on Sunday morning, the loft hatch blew up an smashed down, and the curtains blew across the bed, but I didn't really hear a bang. Dh said it was an explosion but because I didn't hear anything (except loft) I thought it must be nuclear or something!

Well the building has finally started on the new school over here!!! According to the builders , if all goes to plan it will be open for the September 06 intake!!!
