Not sure what to do , as it only seems to appear in the conservatory around 10 pm saturday nights(NO joke) , once when my dad baby sat and then tonight when a babysitter was here , shell never want to come again!!! She caught a fright and called us at the cinema ,(although Im not sure id rush home for a tiny little mouse , no signal so didnt see 2 missed calls on our mobiles till after),It ran accross the room and has disappeared. I have a hunch its found a home inside our big sofa(nice one!!!).Dont really want to put poisen pellets down due to dd , so we have to find a way of catching it, dh says we can use a mouse trap , are there such things?????????????

well... can she say where it came from? go all the way round the conservatory and see if you can find any little holes where it may be coming in and out... and block them up!

you can get humane mousetraps... then release anything you catch!

melsy · 10/12/2005 22:58

yes my sentiments to Essbee , seems cruel. Dont want to give it pain poor teeeny thing. Dh did look right round and didnt find any gaps , we couldnt see or hear it , so thought may be it had gone out the doors. It may have come in that way last saturday night when the door was open to let gas man go look at pipes outside!

There are various traps,
Good old fashioned wood and metal ones just like on tom and jerry.
New plastic ones that we found weren't quite strong enough and resulted in a mouse running about with one attached to its leg.
Human ones that will tip up and trap mouse when they enter and then you take it for a long walk and leave somewhere far away.

If it has just arrived you could put down poison, we put it under the kitchen units away from the kids. If its been about for a while it might have a nest and young. They go back to the nest to die and smell a bit after a while.

put down a humane trap with ginger biscuits in but make sure you check it daily, i think i would rather be caught by a nasty trap than left to starve to death! then keep it down for a few weeks after the first one has gone to check it hasnt been inviting friends over

Skrimble · 10/12/2005 23:04

You may never find a hole or gap, my freind was adiment she would never have mice as there was no way in, she found a nest in the bottom of her wardrobe ha ha.

I doubt very much you could tempt it out the door with chees but it would be funny to watch .

melsy · 10/12/2005 23:04

Thats my worry with letting it die from poisen , as I feel it may be living inside sofa. Not sure I want decomposing mice under there. Poor things.

Is this the humane one you mentioned humane trap ???

that doesnt look like the one i use and mine was a lot less expensive! ask at a pet shop, thats probably best bet. i think i read that they only need a hole the size of a pencil or something ridiculous like that, so not surprising you cant find where it is getting in!

melsy · 10/12/2005 23:09

oooh oooh ohh dh just saw it come out from under the sofa, he reckons hes gonna cath it !!!!!

No its a little black plastic tube thing from B&Q.

Found this while I am searching for a pic.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house,
The creatures were stirring, there was more than one mouse.
The holly I'd hung on the mantle with care
had been stripped of it's berries, the mice had been there!

The mince pies I'd left out for Santa that night
had been gnawed at the edges, that couldn't be right.
And the baked orange slices that once looked so nice
Now looked more like cartwheels, youv'e guessed it the mice!

Our nights had been restless for over a week
so a kind way to catch them I set out to seek.
Turned to the computer, whilst saying a prayer
that somebody, somewhere had left something there!

Typed in "Humane mouse traps" Then guided my mouse,
wishing it was the only one left in the house.
No one there to help me, not even a sniff,
Wait a moment Ive noticed this site by Steve Smith.

I noted the items he said I would need,
then raced to the kitchen with incredible speed,
A tray and a glass dish I set out to find,
Whatever it took well I just didn't mind.

The mouse traps were baited and so was my breath'
We declared friendly war without any death.
So we all settled down in our beds for the night
Silently hoping we'd set the traps right!

Then out in the hallway I heard such a clatter,
I leapt out of bed to see what was the matter,
And there on the landing what a wonderful sight
A wee mouse in a trap, thank you Steve and goodnight!

link{http://www.animalmad.ltd.uk/Online_Catalogue_Pest_Control_4.html\The trip trap} one looks similar to what we have, don't get the V ones they are like the plastic ones the poor mous had to limp about with.

Homebase or B&Q have them, or a good hardware store.

melsy, tempt it with chocolate! We used the humane traps, but have since got so fed up with the mice, we now use the 'snap-them-dead' traps, coat it with chocolate sauce (the stuff in squeezy bottles you put on ice cream) and it gets them every time! I have had enough of mice this year!!!!!!!!!!

GemgleBells · 11/12/2005 22:16

Chocolate biscuits! Best thing to tempt rodents.

My cat once brought home a live vole. Managed to separate the 2 and proceeded to try and courner the vole with a small bin and a dustpan. Finally got it cournered, it had no where left to go but into the bin, when Dh lent over the top of me with his industrial vacumn hose and sucked the poor mite up!

He wasn't popular in the house for a while!
