I truly don't get why people 'discuss it' calmly

put any other race, creed, nationality in the box and there'd be a big ol' hoohah

quietly disgusted of london

memories of all those 'chav' threads, anyone?

travellers, gypsies, anyone?

PruniStuffing · 08/12/2005 20:42

But most of those posters were saying it is wrong to be racist and that they personally aren't for one reason or another.

Racist 'rant' it is not.

Curmudgeonlett · 08/12/2005 20:42

They do the same to the Welsh too

Anne Robonson was taken to the Equal ops people for her comments about us, They dismissed them.

Curmudgeonlett · 08/12/2005 20:43

Pruni .. read it again .. put Jew / Black / Pakistani / whatever in place of the word American .. put stereotypical traits there too

it isn't as far as I am concerned (in answer to the thread)

I don't know what difference it makes exactly, but no-one was talking about an ethnic group, but a nationality, a cultural grouping.

Curmudgeonlett · 08/12/2005 20:45

Judaism is a religion not a nationality

OP posts:
Curmudgeonlett · 08/12/2005 20:46

.. and ethnically diverse from the black falashas of ethiopa to russian and polish to spanish and portuguese .. should I continue

(not angry at you pruni .. just generally narked)

Stupid question, but what posters? Does anyone have a link to a piccy of one?

Blandmum · 08/12/2005 20:47

Factoid

There are more Jews in new York than tel Aviv

PruniStuffing · 08/12/2005 20:47

I didn't call it a nationality. I am not thick.

expatinscotland · 08/12/2005 20:47

I am non-white, but 'look' white. In fact, I'm the majority of Americans now - the majority are not white, believe it or not. But I'm used to all sorts of comments and remarks - about ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, etc.

IME, getting angry about it accomplishes little.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 08/12/2005 20:48

ahh well - you lot obviously don't visit many other English speaking forums from other countries - some of the rants about us lot here in the UK are fantasticly funny to read - some of the 'ideas' they have about us are staggering..............gawd only knows what the non English forums are saying about us LOL.

JingleShells · 08/12/2005 20:49

People are unique, every single one, they can't be put in little labelled boxes, but I see this happening several times a day on MN.

sis · 08/12/2005 20:56

so QoQ does racism from others make it okay to be racist?!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 08/12/2005 21:23

I'm going to work - but I'll say this - I said I find it FUNNY when I come across people from other countries generalising about us.

If we never wanted to cause offence or upset anyone, about anything then we'd better just shut out gobs.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 08/12/2005 21:24

and anyhow - just like on the other thread - it's not about a "race" it's about a nationality - they say "black Brits" or "white Brits" - they just lump us all together.

PeachyPlumFairy · 08/12/2005 21:30

Know what you mean, Curmudgeonlett. DS1's old teacher used to put Welsh rugby signs up all over school, and make themn pull faces at the English team- this was in Somerset. From anywhere else it would be an issue, but the whole Welsh / Scottish / American things seems OK. Not on in my opinion.

oh TWIGLETT god it's you
that has been bothering me all day

maZebraltov · 08/12/2005 21:33

umm... but I don't think anyone has really ranted against Americans. Stitch only referred vaguely to "stereotypes".

Anyway, I hate it when people start threads to complain about other threads. I view that as tantamount to a personal attack.

I rarely mind the English slagging off other cultures because they are always most venomous about themselves.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 08/12/2005 21:34

[sorry that was pretty irrelevant]
