places to donate womens and childrens clothes?

i'm looking more specially like shelters/refuge homes/half way homes? not really charity shops. where the clothes will be given for free. i know in the US sometimes churches have free clothing drives (well, where people go to the church and collect free clothing), is that ever done in the UK?
