I posted a thread last week about my ds (8) wanting a mobile phone, and that I thought this was WAY too young. Well, on the news just now they had an item about a new mobile soon to be on the market called the 'Teddyphone' (which looks not surprisingly like a teddy) which is aimed at children from the age of 4 and up!!!

Sounds like scaremongering nonsense to me, ooooh get one of these phones and prevent the bogeyman etc.

doormat · 29/11/2005 13:54

Yes I know children do get lost HQ
(I am a big advocate of mobiles for children)
but not 4yo.

HRHQoQ · 29/11/2005 13:57

well actually 4yr olds DO get lost - children younger than that get lost too - not to mention those who are at home with their parent/carer and the carer has an accident and is unable to call for help - if the kid has a phone with 4 numbers of people they know on it they can call them for help.

And actulaly - yes a 4/5yr old could manage to enter a full number. DS1 recently called the AA customer service helpline - after he'd memorised the number off an ad we'd seen when in town !

If they can make these phones with 10% radiation, why don't they make all phones with less radiation?

We have the technology.....

Like the sound of the parent activated child monitor option so you can listen to what is going on around your child! Now we will really be able to tell what's going on at nursery

I'd like my DS to have one (he's six mind you) so that if gets scared when he's at Beavers or wherever or needs help (he has AS and panics or forgets things) he could call me.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 14:01

PeachyPlum, were you ForestFly in a previous life?

doormat · 29/11/2005 14:02

HQ are you on one again

i know kids get lost
and what a bright 4yo you have lol to him

IMO it is just another chavtastic opportunity to screw more money out of parents of young children, with scaremongering tactics.

MistleToo · 29/11/2005 14:08

no law says you have to buy them

PeachyPlumFairy · 29/11/2005 14:18

Nooo... I've been around ages.

Peachyclair

And many years ago Punnet (but that one didnt last I kept upsetting people!)

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 14:19

Oh yeah, sorry!

Just seen a news article over here. 2 children at the same school have been diagnosed with cancer, the school has a mobile phone mast right outside it! You could say coincidence, but childhood cancer is very rare, the odds are against getting 2 pupils in the same school suffering from it, especially a country school as this one was.

marthamoo · 29/11/2005 18:54

The Teddyphone man was on the news at lunchtime and he said it was really good because kids wouldn't get mugged for it. Mmmmm. I would say it's too babyish looking for a child much older than 6 - do 4 and 5 year olds get mugged for their mobiles a lot?

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 18:57

My dd has her stuff taken off her sometimes at school. She had a guardian angel medal that her godfather bought her, she kept it in her pocket, but some little shite asked if he could see it and we haven't seen it since!

It's just another distraction at school too. I don't know why parents allow their kids to go to school with phones, games and the like, but they do!

PeachyPlumFairy · 29/11/2005 20:28

Cliff, two of my cousins got leaukaemis, a really rare kind many years ago (I was 5). one survivced, one didnt (they weren't brother and sister, also cousins). Uncle set up a charity researching such things (then had a breakdown and went to a psychi hospital for ten years). He swears they ahd evidence that radiation from power stations causes these things, but it was gotten by illegal means so they didnt dare release it.

Obviously its not reliable, but Grandad worked on setting up the local power station and tells tales of some pretty dodgy stuff.

I hate radiation, it's dangerous and there's lots to learn about it. Whatever the source, i don't trust it.

The phones free and you just pay for the calls? I might get one for my niece if thats the case!
