If it is the latest it is pirated, if it is pirated, it is illegal. The money made from this illegal industry goes to finance drug cartels.

Tamba · 27/11/2005 18:56

I dont think he sells drugs, just Dvds.

If you have them on dvd before the films out at the cinema does that mean its pirated? or can you have got them from somewhere else?

(he gives us loads of freebies -i feel like a criminal now )

He might not sell drugs, but the originators of the pirated copy most likely do. If you've got them before the official DVD comes out then they are pirated, and LGJ is right - pirated DVDs finance the drugs industry.

No such thing as a "good" copy - pirated videos are bad news. One of my bugbears this - my mother's house is full of pirated videos and I just want to burn them all.

Blandmum · 27/11/2005 18:58

He may not sell drugs, but the money thatis involved in this sort of thing is often linked to srugs and other more 'serious' crime.

If you can get a DVD before it has been releaced in the UK then, yes, it will have been pirated (unless you bought it in america IYSWIM)

Tamba · 27/11/2005 18:58

oh dear - i was all excited and am just getting into trouble!

I won't allow pirated DVDs and videos in the house - my mother thinks I'm weird (well ... ) but I really do feel quite strongly about them.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 27/11/2005 19:00

I won't either WWB.

Clayhead · 27/11/2005 19:01

WWB, I'm the same. Just won't have them.

After all, someone somewhere is making dodgy money out of them, whether it's drug dealers, terrorists or whatever.

roisin · 27/11/2005 19:04

We don't allow them in the house either.

I'm surprised some people view this differently from other crimes. It's illegal. End of story.

Enid · 27/11/2005 19:05

lol poor tamba

IlanaK · 27/11/2005 19:06

I agree. And recently I tried to get hold of The Jungle Book on dvd for my son. I hadn't realised at the time that it is not on release. Anyway, I was shocked at how many sellers on ebay had copies - totally illegal. I only found one that was a real seller with an original - and it was going for silly money. As I was not going to fund the sellers with illegal copies, I did not buy one in the end.

Tamba · 27/11/2005 20:03

told hubby off on your behalf!!

Enjoy the popcorn though - that's legal

NutcrackingXmas · 27/11/2005 20:39

We have had copies Tamba, don't bother so much now cos they are generally crap.

Instead we wait until they are actually out on dvd and then my brother buys or rents them and copies them for us.

And NO I don't care.

BahHumbugBadgerBadger · 28/11/2005 01:26

Tamba, it may well have been sourced from one of the p2p networks in which case it's unlikely money would have exchanged hands, or gone to dealers or cartels. Many people retrieve media in this way and although distribution is considered breach of copywright, it probably isn't lining the coffers of anyone at all, given that it's free.
