presents for a 1 year old's birthday

DS will be 1 next month and I'm stuck for ideas for presents (from dh and myself and from family who are alreday asking what he wants). As a second child he has inherited a multitude of toys, so we are stuck for ideas (and TBH the same is true for christmas). I feel really bad that everything is "second-hand" (I know he is totally unaware of this) so would love someone to help me with some novel ideas.

DD had a pop up ball blast at that age and all the children loved it.

ds got this for his 1st b/day and loves it here

ds4 will be one also next month. I have bought him one pressie so far and I might buy him one more for the other dc's to wrap for him.

As he is my 5th he needs nothing and won't know the difference! If relatives ask what he wants I ask for money so I can buy him clothes as and when he needs them. Or open an account for him so you can pay the money staright in and it's there when you want it.

books and clothes

family love buying baby clothes

'That's not my' tractor/car/dinosaur/monster etc books go down very well with ds

thanks for all the ideas so far. The trouble is that he really doesn't need new toys of any description, as we have another child who is almost 4 so we are stock up with toys (in a few years it will be different as the eldest is a girl and her recent toys are very girly). I know he won't know any better but I want to make it special as you only get one first birthday and christmas (plus with only 6 days between the 2 I'm worried he will end up missing out birthday wise in the future.

Hi DS was 1 in September and it was the same for us as he is no. 4. We got him a push along/ride on Tomy thing which he likes but he got this little chair from grandparents by fisher price. It sings abc and talks to you. He loves it.

cuddlymum · 24/11/2005 18:10

sorry we crossed ! What about some nice books or a really nice handpainted toy box for the bedroom.

Hulababy · 24/11/2005 18:11

Why not get him something personalised, just for him - like a little wooden chair .

cuddlymum · 24/11/2005 18:16

I know that you said that you don't want toys but what about boys toys ie. train tracks, tractors. It was the same for us when DS1 was small but it was nice to have some boys things like fire engines etc.

ds got this from MIL for his 1st birthday. The noise it makes scared the sh&t out of him for a few days, but he really likes it now (and you can turn the sound off!). It is sturdy and looks like it'll last him a bit longer than some other toys, development-wise.

chicagomum · 24/11/2005 18:26

We have Dh's old Brio train track plus cars and fire trucks. I know getting money will be handy in the future but I just have visions of ds watching the film of his birthday party in the uture and being disappointed that he didn't really get any pressies.

My 4th child is 1 just before xmas. She is getting a Little Tikes rocker and small slide that have been in the loft for a year! Although you do only get one 1st birthday, you don't remember it!

CarolinaMoon · 24/11/2005 18:30

well, get some toys then - you can't have too many IMH & of-people-with-lots-of-toys O.

It's not that great for tinies to tear open their presents and find e.g. a pair of trousers is it? Toys have more of an "oooh" factor I think.

How about a drum or tambourine or something?

mazzystar · 24/11/2005 19:09

oh i dunno, i reckon the fun is in the unwrapping, whatever it is. st for ds first bday in october we wrapped up lots of practical things like vests and hat and gloves that he was going to get anyway as well as the books and things we had got him. he was thrilled and wanted to put them on!

for xmas he is getting more books (his favourite) and some russian dolls. and probably some pyjamas and socks!
