spidermama · 15/11/2005 19:56

LilacBump · 15/11/2005 19:56

My sympathy - remember well the first winter I spent in my first house with no heating. It was so cold that even the shampoo froze, and the toilet water! Having a bath was a complete nightmare!

Tamba · 15/11/2005 19:58

right off to take the plunge brrrrr

(my typing gets more and more like cods )

well yeah... but loads of people did/do that!

as i say, our flat has no heating either but we all survive!
my house i grew up in had no heating either!

margyfargy · 15/11/2005 20:01

Should add that my eventual solution was to get up earlier and go down to the local swimming pool on the pretext of going for a swim (but really I had a shower to get warm)!

I was without hot water and heating for three days earlier this year when it was snowing - ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE - particularly with little kids - ds2 wasn't even one, they were wearing hats and two pairs of socks at home. Managed to get hold of a couple of electric heaters - one for the bedroom and one for the living room.

Still had a bath though, heated water in pans on the cooker, took it upstairs, poured into ds's baby bath and used a jug to pour over myself while sitting in main bathtub.

sympathies Tamba - I am a creature of warmth and cosiness and our heating packed up two weeks ago. Waiting for the part or plumber or both.

We've got a gas fire luckily and an emersion heater so hot water but it's a flashback to the old days (ha ha) when you get undressed in record time and hop into the bath and then you don't want to get out! No warm towels - hellish!

I did do a little dance for DH when I came downstairs in my socks, slippers, pjs, big fluffy dressing gown and I sang

"don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me"

as i sashayed into the kitchen.

He fell off the sofa laughing.

Do you not have any electrical heaters you can plug in, or know someone who has one you can borrow, along with.........

A hot water bottle
elecric blanket

Tamba · 15/11/2005 20:36

Back

Dh joined me in the bath to keep me warm lol

Am wrapped in his big dressing gown now over my jammies whilst he does the manly thing and freezes lol

it is probably dangerous, but when we had no heating, I turned on all the rings on our electric cooker and stayed in the kitchen all day

Electric bill was a bit of a shock though.

Skribble · 15/11/2005 22:33

Oh I remember the days trying to get the open fire to light when the paper is too damp and standing aroung the gas cooker with all the rings on high. Watching the electric meter whizzing around when i plug in the oilfilled delongi heater.

nightowl · 15/11/2005 23:20

symapthies. i spent two years in this house with no heating. we used to to run from one room to another (only had my fire in the living room) !!

sparklymieow · 15/11/2005 23:25

I had no heating once for 72 hours, in the winter. the gas pipe for my cooker fell out of the ceiling and gassed my mum, I switched it off and Transco came and shut off the gas and the council wouldn't come out till the monday to sort it out (this was the friday) its was freezing!!!!! brrrrrr

nightowl · 15/11/2005 23:38

funny that sparkly, the council consider a blocked drain to be a cause for 24 hr callout but they happily left me without heating or hot water for a week too.

eemie · 15/11/2005 23:56

Remember being a penniless student, waking up cold in the morning, thinking what am I going to wear today, where is it, and how fast can I leap out of bed, locate it, and get it back under the downie so I can get dressed in bed?

Worst example - long weekend on call, coming back to cold house, going to bed to find I'd left a hot-water-bottle in it. This was 1978, the year double decker buses were buried in the snow and people ski-ed to work in Sheffield. The water in the HWB had frozen, swelled up, and split the HWB. Then there had been a little thaw, then another night of -10C. There was a layer of frost sticking the top sheet to the bottom sheet.

And did I mention that there were sixteen of us living in a cardboard box in t'middle o' t'motorway?
