Want to get him or her a classic teddy bear. One that he / she will always have and can say his/her mum & dad bought esp just before he/she was born.

What do you think:
It's theblack angora one I thought was nice, and don't want to / can't spend more than that one really.

ID:
EAN-027352 Steiff Bears - Auction Highlights Teddy 1912 - 4.75 In
Auction highlights Teddy bear 1912, mohair

Very cute - but pricey! Bonus is that black won't show grubby marks as much as a paler bear!

ThomCat · 09/11/2005 22:11

It is pricey which is why I'm seeking approval! and not telling D!
It is steiff though.
Lottie has one, noit bought by me I hasten to add and not a black angora one.

Sall I go for it.
It's the only thing new baby will get and is a welcome to the world and Xmas gift in one.

Sounds good. The old bears wear very well because they're made of woven plush, not knitted like modern bears, which gives them a more robust surface. I have 3 which were given to me as a toddler by an elderly acquaintance of my mum's, and they are at least 50yo and have been well-loved by her daughter and by me, and are in pretty good condition (despite one of them having been mauled by the dog).

Just be aware that the eyes and joints will not be to modern safety standards, and you may need to supervise your d? with the bear until you know how ?e treats it.

ThomCat · 09/11/2005 22:15

Lotties lives next to it's box on her top shelf above all her books for when she is older too!

So that's 2 'go for it's' then

Go for it - if you can't spend money on a keepsake for your newie - then when can you!

ThomCat · 10/11/2005 08:58

Thanks Anymore 'go for it's', or any alternative ideas?

cute but mohair comes out so your child won't be able to play with it until much older ... mouthfull of mohair / bald bear anyone?

for me nothing beats the jellycat ranges

bsg · 10/11/2005 15:12

Why dont you buy the harrods christmas bear with this years date on 2005 the year that your baby was born (or is going to be born).I bought them for mine.

aloha · 10/11/2005 15:19

I think it's sweet Thomcat. A lovely idea. Am buying a rather pedestrian white kitten from Laura Ashley for dd, but a similar thought.

bundle · 10/11/2005 15:20

£50 for a teddy? I'm sure there are lots of other things I'd rather get. But if you like it and can spare the cash, why not?

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/11/2005 15:23

Go for it, it is only 5 weeks Child Benefit.

diva4mgl · 10/11/2005 15:26

pure collection makes cashmere teddy bears in pink and blue, they are lovely. but you must know the gender of you baby.
cashmere is nicer than mohair i think

ThomCat · 10/11/2005 15:29

It is a lot of money but it's a steiff - v collectable pieces.
It will be something to keep rather than something to play with.
Jelly cat stuff is fab and Lottie has quite a bit of lovley jellycat stuff but I wanted a keepsake type of gift.

Something is stopping me going for it hence me bumping this for more opinions.
I do really like the idea of the steiff but want to make sure before spending that much.
If you all think it's nice that's good enough for me

I like it but personally I would go for one of the more traditional blonde bears, perhaps one of the 2005 editions? They are a bit pricier though!

Blu · 10/11/2005 15:34

I think it's lovely.

I would get a more floppy / cuddly jellycat type for everyday cuddling, but this smart black fellow as a keepsake!

diva4mgl · 10/11/2005 15:39

go for it, if its keepsake for your unborn baby,
i think its lovely idea. i would go 2005 one for dd

Go for it. It's not that pricey as a special gift. AND it's a quality bear that is an investment.

ThomCat · 10/11/2005 15:53

Thanks Bethron, and everyone. Needed that bit of help deciding. Being a bit wishy washy with my final decision. WSill get a jelly cat type when baby is here and sex known, think i'll go for that steiff but will quickly look into the date idea too.

DS1 has a limited edition 1999 Merrythought bear and DS2 has a Steiff. We bought them as first christmas presents and they're not for playing with yet

ThomCat · 10/11/2005 15:54

Cheers Soupie, just what i needed. Don't normally have a problem buying things and spending money but needed approval on this purchase, thanks

Ooooh - if you want a cheap 2005 bear, the Baby Fraser bear from House of Fraser is gorgeous and only £8. He has a lovely red duffle coat.

ThomCat · 10/11/2005 15:57

Hmmm, might get that anyway, but not instead of. Might get them one each, from each other!
